Sororities: is it possible to rush and not get a bid?

How common is that? it seems like more girls rush than there are spots available.

it happens

Actually not possible. You’re guaranteed a bid as long as you never cut a house from your list. A lot of girls decide they don’t like it or, much more commonly, are cut from the houses they like and decide to drop out.

are you cut along the way or at the very end? how many girls rush each year and how many does each sorority usually take per pledge class?

It’s somewhat confusing. You start looking at all 8. First round you are cut to a max of 6. Then to max of 4, then to 2, then to 1. Some girls will visit the max amount of houses each round, while others will be asked back to fewer. I think somewhere around 500 girls rushed last year. Each sorority gives out 35-40 bids (except for Phi Sigma Sigma, which has had trouble filling pledge classes). Obviously a lot of people drop out of rush.
