Sorority - no bids

I thought that if you participated in all of the sorority rush events you would get a bid i*, but I understand there were a number freshmen girls from the on-campus dorms who got no bids this year. The word on the street is that there were too many girls pledging for too few openings. Anyone know what happened?

How does this work?

There is never a guarantee of a bid. Back in my day, sororities were limited to 50 new pledges per year. I don’t know if that rule still exists, but it would explain how some would not get bids if there were lots of girls rushing this year. My heart goes out to them, it’s tough to be left out.

I attended a greek session at Parent Orientation. They said that you were not guaranteed. My daughter did get in. I was told that 45-50 kids were taken by each sorority. There were 13 involved. MY D said that over 700 girls rushed. So that absolutely leaves some out. FYI. SDT sorority did not participate in rush due to some prior sanctions. MY guess is that they will be looking to fill their group now. If someone is left out, they might contact them and find out if there are opportunities. I do not know much about them. Just trying to be helpful.

My own college did not have sororities and my daughter who goes to UT did not rush. Hmmm. If you search, here is what pops up. I will search more later.

Socal Dad - I think SDT is a Jewish sorority. I don’t know if it is exclusively or not.

Midwest Mom - Wow - what the heck does all that mean???

While SDT was a “jewish sorority” at one time, I hear it is quite a mix now. Not sure of all the facts. I was repeating what was told to me.

UT Athletics Man - Little cynical, eh? There are many sororities at UT. Just as people are all different, so are the sororities. While I would agree with you about some, it is certainly not the case for all of them.

I feel bad for the girls that didn’t get in…must hurt

I saw alot of girls with black dresses, heels, and plastic bags running around. Looks more like humiliation than rushing.

How’s that humiliation? They just want them to look nice during rush, its FORMAL rush for a reason (not necessarily because of the formal wear, but rather that its a more formal by the book method, unlike fraternities which generally rush informally)

UT has guaranteed placement IF you are invited to preference parties and IF you maximize your options (ie put the maximum number of parties you attended on your bid card), so if you attended 2 pref parties, and you know you DO NOT want to be in one of the houses, and leave them off the bid card, you may be dropped. Or, if you are not invited to any houses for pref (or before) you are dropped from recruitment.

So, what I’m trying to say is, there’s no guarantee if you go through rush that you will be placed, but if you are not dropped (or drop yourself) before pref, you will be placed.

But, also many girls drop on their own due to the fact that they aren’t happy with the choices they have remaining, if their preferred houses do not invite them back.

So, it’s not that they set quota with 700 (or the number of girls who START recruitment) divided by 13. They set quota based on the number of remaining girls invited to pref parties divided by 13. Then there are “quota addtions” to bring a house up to “total”.

Does all this make sense?

I know that alot of girls had a tough time this year, and I’m really sad for those who didn’t pledge.

anhtimmy - the black dresses are what they wear on the last night - pref night, which is formal, obviously they wear heels with them, the plastic bags are for their makeup, hairbrish, etc, because they aren’t allowed to carry a purse. The other days were much less formal, shorts & tees, sundresses etc.

It’s not humiliating to look pretty…

The fraternities are totally informal, there is no formal fraternity rush at UT.

Just out of curiosity, why aren’t they allowed to carry a purse?

Quota was 46 and every house met quota, so that means that a minimum of 598 received bids during the formal process. In addition, I believe two houses were significantly below total before rush started, so they may have taken more. SDT only does continous open bidding, which is after formal rush. Another house also usually got a lot of girls through this method, but they’ve improved drastically for them in the past couple years, including a major house renovation, and word on the street is that they did significantly better than normal. Whether this means they were competitive for the same girls other houses were going for I’m not certain.

A lot of the girls who don’t get bids suicide at some point–they dislike a sorority, so they don’t put them on the card at all. At this point, it means that if you get cut by all sororities you pref, you don’t get a bid. Otherwise, if you get cut by all three sororities you pref, and maximized your options every round, I believe you get your first choice after pref.

They don’t carry purses because they have to leave the bags outside of the house with the Recruitment Counselors who escort the groups to the houses, they aren’t allowed to bring anything in with them or out of the houses (a panhellenic rule that is strictly enforced so there is no exchange of “gifts” etc).

The RC’s cannot be resposible for watching purses, with wallets and other items inside. A bunch of plastic baggies with powder, handy wipes, tissues, etc. is not a liability to watch.

edit to add: if you maximize your options every round, you are not guaranteed your first choice, you are guaranteed one of your choices. If you are invited to 3 pref parties, you may recieve a bid to any of the 3, not necessarily your top choice. If you are released before the pref round, you are not guaranteed a bid, no matter if you maximized your options to that point, you are just dropped out of the process.

^Does this mean that representatives from the houses get together to discuss which house gets which girl or, or which house has to take a certain girl? It would seem that some kind of coordination would be necessary for the system to work.

I feel sorry for the girls who maximize all of their options but don’t get invited to any preference parties. That’s got to hurt.

I know of at least one freshman who just wanted to “be in a sorority” and didn’t get any bids. Apparently there were times in the process when she was told she was supposed to rank sororities; there was no obvious way to say “any sorority would be fine with me.” What should she have done differently in order to be guaranteed to “be in a sorority”? (and why didn’t anyone tell her that there was a way to do this?)

Or I am too gullible and this could not have really happened this way? I just heard the quick version of the story and I have no idea what “maximize your options” means - sounds like something related to stocks and bonds…

She likely didn’t rank all of her houses or else didn’t submit her rankings at all.

One main reason girls aren’t allowed to carry purses is so that the houses don’t judge/cut them based on how nice their purses are. They aren’t supposed to judge girls based on their parents’ income, though it of course happens.

They are not allowed to carry anything into the house or out of the house - that is why they cannot bring purses.

This has to do with panhellenic rules that state that they cannot recieve gifts from the houses, and by not letting them bring a bag in, they can be assured that they don’t take something from the house.

This rule is enforced and in place now because in the old days, houses would give gifts to the pnms. Well, you can imagine how out of hand that could get!! So, nationwide they put a stop to it!

You can’t even take a 1/2 eaten cookie with you out the door now, or a napkin! Nor can you bring in an umbrella or your bag filled with toiletries, they have to be left outside under the watch of the rho chi’s.

Those are the rules - not because they may judge you by your purse! If that were the case, they might have to rush naked, because you can be judged by your clothing as well. ;)

i’m pretty sure only the pnms would object to that lol jk
