How hard is it to get into a sorority at duke? Yes I realize this post is shallow. I'm fairly pretty but not overwhelmingly so. I have a nice body, and I'm smart. If I got into duke could I get into a sorority? What are some of they're reputations?

This isn’t going to be a particularly helpful reply to you, but I’m going to say it anyway. There’s no point in worrying about that now. You have an entire semester before you even begin to think about. Use those first 3 months (yeah, that’s really all it is, so make it count, you only get to be a freshman once!) to figure out what YOU want to make of Duke. Maybe a sorority will fit into that, maybe it won’t, but you’ve gotta take the time to figure that out for yourself. Meet freshman, meet upperclassmen, talk to them!

And congratulations. Duke is an amazing place. You’re gonna love it.

If your goal is to join a sorority you will have no problems. If your goal is to join a SPECIFIC sorority then you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. I speak from experience.

Yeah that makes sense. Thankyou both. Are some sororities…“better” than others like socially how people think of them? Or are they all just different?

You’ll find opinions across the board. And, yeah, each sorority is absolutely different–mainly because there’s about 80+ different, interesting individuals in each one.

And, again, people across campus have different opinions of each one and sororities/fraternities/greek life as a whole. Some people love it, some people hate it (sorority/greek life, etc.). It’ll take some time before you figure out if it’s something you’re interested in.

Personally, it’s been the best decision I’ve made at Duke–for me, it’s a tremendously powerful support structure. A group of individuals that are not only there to support me (through the good and the bad) but also to push me to become the best possible person/student I can be. But, again, I’m one of about 1500 in my class. Plenty of people have different opinions and have gotten different things out of greek life. You’ll learn a lot more by actually being on campus (O-week is coming!) than through a message board like this (no offense meant–words are words and are certainly helpful and informative, but nothing beats the real thing of actually experiencing it).

Get excited!
