Sororities

I'll be a freshman at W&M next year, and I'm interested in joining a sorority :)

Does anyone know the stereotypes of the individual sororities at W&M? I'm hoping to join one that isn't too big into partying, but at the same time, not one that is totally nerdy. Does W&M have any like that?

Define “too big into partying.”

Tons of drinking, drugs… basically the stereotype that is portrayed in every single movie or tv show about greek life.

Rush (which occurs shortly after classes begin) will likely help you sort out your fit with a particular sorority. It’s also likely that each group has a web page that you can puruse to get a sense of what each sorority is about.

Keep in mind that many sororities have spring rush and that many W&M students rush as sophomores so you all need not feel any pressure to make up your mind immediately.

Here’s the most recent Greek Life grade report (Fall 2009), which contains additional info you might find helpful: http://www.wm.edu/offices/greeks/documents/scholarship/GPAInformation_Fall09.pdf</a> It ranks each chapter by GPA - which doesn’t necessarily mean that lower scoring chapters party more, of course. My d, who is in a W & M sorority, says that what some might consider less-partying chapters are among the lower-scoring GPA-wise.

She thought your post was interesting and would advise you to come to campus with an open mind about every house. It’s a cliche of sorority recruitment, but the process does usually mean that each member ends up in the house where she belongs. If you go through recruitment (more commonly known as rush, but d2 was on Panhellenic at another school and is not happy when we don’t call it recruitment), you’ll have many opportunities to learn about the individual houses and what you might expect from each. Rankings are always in the mind of the beholder. The Greek scene at W & M doesn’t prevent close friendships and socializing with non-Greeks. And many people find closeness and a busy social life without being in Greek life - d1 found it in her club sport, and d3 has found lots of social events and close friendships in the dance company, as well as her sorority.

Seems my sorority, Chi Omega, has dropped a bit in the GPA rankings since I was there - that was over 30 years ago. We were not hard partiers back then. It is interesting that the sororities that we considered the “top 4” are in the bottom of the GPA range. I don’t think some of them were there then. I don’t remember Delta Gamma or Delta Sigma Theta.

Thanks for all your help! :)

cartera – It’s now the “big five.” Tri-delt, Theta, Chi o, Kappa, and Pi Phi.

Interesting - based on my experience in the 70s, I would have predicted that Alpha Chi would become the 5th.

generally speaking, W&M greek life is not similar to media portrayals. I mean, obviously there is partying and drinking, but the greek scene is not dominating. Greeks have plenty of friends that are nongreek and in other greek organizations (from my experience as an outsider… I’m sure there are some issues that are mostly kept internal).

There is relatively very little drug use in W&M sororities. There’s very little in the Greek scene overall, except for maybe Pika.

People will tell you that “Pi Phi smokes a lot of weed” and stuff like that but in general Greek life at W&M is tame compared to some of the other party scenes.

The stereotypes are kind of true - Pi Phi smokes the most weed, Tri-Delt gets sloppy drunk Thursday-Sunday, Chi O is sort of “classy,” etc.

As a former TWAMP last year I will fill you in on the current sorority stereotypes and rankings.

Rankings According to Tier:
Top Tier: Kappa Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Theta, Pi Phi
Mid Tier: Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Delta
Bottom Tier: Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi, Alpha Chi Omega

Stereotypes:
Kappa Kappa Gamma: Incredibly wealthy girls. Nicknamed Visa Visa Mastercard by GDIs and some other Greeks. Preppy girls. Not the biggest party animals, but they certainly know how to have a good time. Good standing with administration. Well-respected sorority.

Chi Omega: Known as the hard core party girls. These are often thought of as some of the most attractive girls on campus and often have bubbly personalities; however, do not assume bubbly and pushover are the same - these girls can be evil. Got in trouble for hazing a girl badly two years ago.

Theta: One of the most balanced sororities on campus. Beautiful girls, but have held the top GPA in greek life for the last 4 semesters. These girls really care about the campus and have an awesome time. Very sweet girls, although people label them boring.

Pi Phi: They are certainly known as the stoner sorority on campus, although I don’t know that it is actually deserved… These girls can be a little bratty and are generally just as well-off as the girls in Kappa. They are a lot of fun to be around. More into hipster things and being unique than most of the sororities.

Delta Delta Delta: These girls are a lot of fun. They are referred to as a lower tier version of Chi O, but they are incredibly involved on campus and have less of a mean streak than Chi Os can.

Kappa Delta: Probably as close to Theta as you can get. Kappa Delta girls are incredibly involved on campus and are true sweethearts. They want to see everyone having a good time and are very friendly. They have a good time and have very high standards academically as one of the smart sororities.

Delta Gamma: Lower tier version of Kappa, but just as preppy. The girls are incredibly image conscious and many of them seem more interested in getting an MRS than anything else. Many of the DGs I met were very catty and rude to non-sisters, but they do have a very tight sisterhood. I don’t know much about their party reputation, but they did a lot of stuff with KDR last year.

Gamma Phi: These girls are winningly naive. I believe the last of the true liberals in GPhi graduated last year. These girls are sweet and good natured, but don’t seem to have a clue. They are not big party animals, but they have a good time. Close sisterhood and friendly.

Alpha Chi Omega: Thought of as the most athletic sorority on campus. These girls are sweet and generally are fine with everyone doing their own thing within the sorority (which is a rarity). They know how to have a good time and could go shot for shot with the brothers of Lambo last year.

Based on what you mentioned Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Gamma, and Gamma Phi sound like sororities you may want to consider! Good luck this weekend and pref wisely :)

The OP will be a rising senior this year, since the thread is more than 3 years old … so I presume this has all worked out for her by now.

I hope any prospective sorority members will make their own decisions based on their own interactions with and evaluations of current members.
