Hey everyone,
I am an incoming freshman at Penn and am interested in the Greek scene. People here have already addresssed the different repuations and such, but no one has talked about how much it costs. Does anyone know how much, approximately, the dues would be per semester? I have looked on the websites and can’t find anything about cost. Thanks and can’t wait to be there soon!!

anyone know?

i think its 2000 or so a year, or maybe a semester, but on top of that you'll be expected to pay for tickets to formals, limos, hotel rooms, etc. Read the book "Pledged" it will probably have the general price if memory serves me well.

$2000 a semester? lol, for the fraternities and sororities I know, its not even close to that. I'd say the general range is between 500-850 per semester. Depending on formals, date parties etc you might have to spend more: but only if you're in a fraternity. For sororities, dues covers all the "big ticket" expenses because they don't use dues money to pay for regular parties.

It depends on the organization - there is a big range.

Ok, thanks guys. I have friends rushing now at state schools, and it is about 2,000 a semester. I was hoping Penn would be less than that!

I'd say you aren't going to get a specific answer because you don't accept PMs which is okay but just so you know.

I'm not on this very much, so I have no idea what a PM is or how to accept one...I'll try and figure it out if you have a more specific answer. Thanks!!!

I would like to know about dues as well

Yay, I'm not the only one!

Hey, I'm a brother in TEP. The fees vary widely by frat/sorority, but I can speak for my own frat. All numbers are approximate: There's a $60 fee to rush in the spring of your frosh year. During pledging, you'll occasionally have to spend your own cash on random things for scavenger hunts and stuff, but this usually doesn't amount to much.

Once you're a brother/sister: Many Greek organizations require members to pay $85/year to the University for house maintenance. If the University owns your house, you pay the same rate that you would pay to live in any on-campus housing ($2K-3K per semester). Last but not least, you will pay dues to both the local and national chapters. This is the most variable figure; it really depends on which house you're in. I believe that I pay about $500-$700/semester. The bigger and more popular the frat/sorority, the more they tend to charge (because a large endowment leads to bigger and better parties).

This sounds very expensive, but in many respects, it ends up being about the same as not being a member. For example, if you live in the house, you'll probably arrange your own meal plan. For me, this means paying about $7.50 for meals, as opposed to the $13/meal that most frosh pay, so you're saving a ton of money on food.

Hope that helps.

Thank you soooo much!!!
