Sorority Legacy

Hello!
I dont know where to really post this on here. I am new, but I have a few questions about sorority’s.
I am most liking going to go to a community college my first year of college and than transfer to a university. I am a legacy to DZ (delta zeta). But, will they, let alone any sorority want me my sophomore year?.
Also, will me being a legacy help me get into DZ?. DZ is my dream one because my mother went to DZ but I have an open mind to other sorority’s.

This depends on the school and the sorority in question. Legacies can help in some chapters and make no difference in others. A delta zeta chapter at the University of Madeupsville might say, heck yes, let’s take this legacy. A DZ chapter at Madeupsville State University might shrug if you say that your mom was in DZ at a different school.

I’m in a sorority at the University of Oklahoma. I know exactly jack about how the same chapter at University of Minnesota runs itself.

We’re not there yet with D, but I’ve heard that the more elite sororities at my alma mater don’t guarantee a bid unless you’re at least a double legacy. My guess it’s because of the sheer number of legacies now, they could fill an entire pledge class on legacies alone. BUT what’s elite at my alma mater may have a different reputation somewhere else.

But do keep an open mind. You might find another sorority is a better fit for you. (I give D this same advice - if she pledges the “family” sorority, she’ll be the fourth generation. Who needs that kind of pressure?)

Im just worried no sorority will want me at all because I will be a sophomore :frowning:

There’s just no way to answer the question without knowing the college in question and, to some extent, the sorority at that particular college. A school like Alabama where pledging is (as I understand it) pretty competitive, being a sophomore could be a drawback. But at many, many schools it won’t be a problem at all. So don’t sweat it now. Wait and see where you end up sophomore year, and if it’s super important to you, choose a college where it won’t be an issue.

Every school is different. But two of D2 roommates rushed sophomore year (didn’t try as freshmen) and both had bids. This was big university.

It really does depend on where you go, but lots of women rush their sophomore year.

It sounds like you’re in Florida. Which universities in Florida are you thinking of maybe transferring to? Maybe a few people on CC will be familiar with one or more (no guarantees, but no harm in trying).

“Im just worried no sorority will want me at all because I will be a sophomore”

I wouldn’t worry about this. The sorority will have a certain number of available bids to give. It can give those bids to freshman or sophomores … or even seniors if they want. If you are a legacy, and if both you and the sorority feel that it is a good fit both ways, then it really won’t care if you are a sophomore. Frankly, even if you’re not a legacy, if they love you, you will get a bid!

OP, I wouldn’t waste one minute of worry over this. First, if you have excellent grades, you will mostly likely get a bid, even if you’re a sophomore. Second, each sorority and each chapter within that sorority has different legacy policies. Some would take all legacies; some won’t There’s not a thing you can do to sway that. And you might meet their members and decide that’s not the right place for you. What was right for your mom, at that time, may be wrong for you.
What I’m saying is this: Concentrate on getting the best grades you can. That’s the best thing you can do for yourself. Good luck!
