My d lives in Los Angeles and is planning on attending UT. She wants to rush a sorority, but we do not know anyone who attends UT for advise. We plan on visiting the school the weekend of 3/27. Can anyone give us some knowledge/advice to the process. When is rush? Is there a pre rush? Help.

It is absolutely essential to have alumna recommendations for the sororities for UT. You can find some information on the greekchat.com website, but DO NOT POST there. They are not a friendly bunch.

Here are two threads that pretty much sum up rush at Texas and what you have to do..

If they get deleted (because I'm not sure if it's ok to post threads from other website) go to greekchat.c0m and in the search engine put Texas rush. The two threads are "More Texas Recruitment Info" and "Should Sorority Desires Impact my College Choices" these are pretty recent and have great information.

Should Sorority desires impact my college choice? - GreekChat.com Forums

More Texas Recruitement Info - GreekChat.com Forums

edited to add - the people on greekchat aren't mean, they just get impatient with some posters :)

What else you you need except a rich daddy and to be size 0-2 and be white? (Well, besides masking tape?)

thanks for the helpful advice picox :smirk: Now go back to trolldom.

Picox Who asked you. Jerk

hello socaldad. I'm also rushing at texas, and i have a lot of family that are alumni of sororities there. There's soooo much to know that it would be difficult to spell it all out. But basically, your daughter needs to start getting recommendations now. There are 14 NPC (National Panhellenic) sororites on the UT campus. Your daughter is going to need at LEAST 1 rec letter for each, but for houses that she really likes she should have anywhere from 2 to 6. The more the better. If you read through the tabs on this website:
Office of the Dean of Students - Greek Life and Intercultural Education
it gives you some pretty general information about rush at texas and the sororities that are represented there (costs, stats, etc.). For more specific information about each organization, just google (Example: "university of texas zeta tau alpha")

I don't know if you planned it that way or if your daughter just got lucky, but the weekend of 3/27 is actually greek roundup. So there will be introductory parties going on. If your daughter knows anyone or can possibly meet someone that is in an organization before then (i recommend facebook :)) she will have a much easier time finding out about the parties. But there will be lots of opportunities to meet the greeks that weekend, so if she can't she will be fine.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to private message me and i'd be happy to help. After all, your daughter may be my future sister! :)

And Picox, I'm not sure what it is you have against sororities, but it is clear that you are ignorant as to their true nature. So please, do us all a favor and stick to what you know.

correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm not into greek life. Doesn't the selectivity depend the sorority. the bigger ones like DG, tri-delt, thetas are more difficult, the smaller ones are much easier. but I guess your daughter is probably looking to join the bigger sororities. the sorority girls I know told me that if you are legacy then you are in, so was your wife in a sorority?

At Texas, some of the sororities have more legacies going through recruiment every year than there are spots in the pledge class, so it is not a sure thing by any means.

Selectivity does depend on the sorority, but all the houses at Texas have great girls, and if you stick with recruitment through to the end, by optimizing your opportunities there is "guaranteed placement".

This doesn't mean a pnm is guaranteed the house of their choice, just that they are guaranteed a spot in a house. Quota is determined by the number of girls who attend pref divided by the number of houses.
