UT Austin - sophomore sorority rush for CAP txfr student

My daughter is in the UT CAP program. She will transfer to Austin in Fall’24. I’m curious about any recommendations or concerns for sorority rush for sophomores. Consider rush at UTSA as freshman & transfer versus wait? Housing recommendations?

Even personal DMs about insights would be greatly appreciated. I went to an OOS school decades ago & so much has changed!

After observing some negative, catty behavior within her HS dance team that goes against her values, she’s reconsidering sorority life & has a fear of social media superficial expectations and inappropriate behavior (her words, not mine). A reality check would be VERY helpful. Thank you.

If she joins a sorority as a freshman, that’s her sorority for life. If she transfers, she can affiliate with a chapter at Austin if they invite her to do so. Of course, that would mean she has no choice if those are the sisters she wants to be with. It’s really a 50/50 thing with whether she should take her chances in getting in as a sophomore or join as a freshman and then hope to be welcomed, and if she is welcomed than have a sure thing for getting in. Since she knows she’s transferring, she could spend some time as a spring freshman getting to know the members at the Austin chapter.

I think it is okay to wait, to see how she likes college and what the sororities do. Although most of the PNM at Austin are freshmen, I’m sure more than a handful are sophomores and that might give her a good way to break into the social scene as a sophomore.

That’s the direction we were thinking. While a sorority’s main values are there, the girls between campuses might be very different. Seems she’ll better connect with her true Austin “tribe” by waiting.
Appreciate hearing your opinion!

Of the 6 sororities at UTSA, only 2 have chapters at UT. Great young women in each with different vibes. So if she went through recruitment at UTSA, she’d only want those two, which might not be up to her. Or even if she liked both, the chapters at UT may have a different vibe. Better to wait.

DM me if you’d like.
