South Carolina colleges: Coker, Erskine, Furman, Lander, Wofford

For someone looking to send a child to a private college in South Carolina, are all of these good options? I know that Furman considers itself (or some people at Furman consider it) to be “Ivy League”, but how is the reputation of the others? Would USC-Columbia be a better option if it’s cheaper?

Thanks.

I’d pick USC Columbia if it’s cheaper than the private schools. Wofford is a good school but it’s way too expensive.

Actually Wofford is ranked higher than Furman in quite a few publications and tends to be more generous with aid.

Wofford and Furman are the 2 with national recognition. The others may have less appeal for someone from outside of SC, being lesser known and with the majority of students from SC… Nearby in NC are Elon and Guilford. Also Davidson, which is much more selective than these others.

Actually University of South Carolina Honors also has national recognition .

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that. And Clemson is a great school too.

What about College of Charleston? It’s public and you mentioned privates, but it is quite a good school.

I totally agree with @LuckyCharms913 . It certainly has the feel of a private with the price tag of a public. They have some innovative programs as well. Does your child have a desired major yet?

Are you looking for conservative or religious schools?
For merit aid ?
What are his stats?
Academically demanding and better than the others, Wofford and Furman. You could consider Wake Forest, too.
Seconding college of Charleston.

Do you have a son or daughter? My D really liked Converse a lot…they have a strong science program as well as the arts, which she wants to do “on the side”. She has applied to all of the above mentioned schools - Furman, CofC, USC-cola, and Converse. She is a STEM major, but is also a big musical theatre person, so wants to be able to participate in that.

Have you considered Presbyterian College?
