Wofford College

Can anyone tell me about this school? Does it really have a good reputation (for a tiny school) or is the book I am reading a bit biased?

Wofford College is a South Carolina liberal arts college with a long history. It has been well-regarded in its region (lots of judges and executives in South Carolina are alumni) but in recent years it has received broader recognition for its academic assets.

As for student life, it is one of the very few small colleges that maintain a Division 1 intecollegiate sports program.

The Spartanburg SC region is enjoying a economic boom. It has long been a manufacturing center in SC. A few years ago automaker BMW built a plant in Spartanburg and it was soon joined by other technology companies. Spartanburg is situated right on Interstate-85, so Charlotte NC and Atlanta GA are an easy drive away.

thanks! Has anyone here visited this college? I hadn't even heard of it until now and I am wondering if the education and reputation add up enough to be worth the tuition. While not hugely expensive, this is opposed to my state school (University of Mississippi), where I can go free. If I can't find a good school that's worth the tuition, Ole Miss is kind of it. Would having a degree from 'Wofford' really help me enough in Masters and job apps to be worth the cost? All input would be greatly appreciated..

I don't think Wofford offers much of an edge over Ole Miss in terms of grad school or job recruiting unless you plan to stay in upstate South Carolina for the rest of your life. Ole Miss is well known throughout the Southeast.

Fiske says Wofford is mostly attended by conservative, affluent whites. I suppose the social networks can help in getting a job, if you can stand the lack of diversity and the staid environment.

Wofford has a large biology program.

I think in SC Wofford might be considered a step down from Furman. They have a great mascot for athletics...the Terriers.

PackMom, on what basis do you make the comment that Wofford is a step down from Furman?

Lake Washington...that was the impression I got from 2 of our best friends who are from S.C and Furman grads. Guess I shouldn't pass on heresay. Sorry if I mispoke.

As a native Mississippian and a resident of South Carolina - having not attended either school I feel overqualified to comment. Of course I am joking about my qualifications, but I will try to help! Wofford seems to have a pretty good endowment so I wouldn't dismiss it before you determine what kind of merit/financial aid you can get. I do not know many grads from Wofford but last year during the Senate race here I volunteered with a crew of Democrats from Wofford and they were a lively bunch and seemed to be very influenced by some liberal thinking professors there. So they are not all conservatives! The campus is beautiful and is located downtown. They do have a great Bio program and from what I understand they have a high med/dental school matriculation rate. I think Wofford is on par with Furman - I have heard that Furman's advantage is location. Ole Miss is also a beautiful campus and because of its size you will always find somewhere to fit in. The cost is a major advantage and you will be closer to home. Ole Miss is a good school and would offer great opportunities especially for students who are 'gogetters'. IMO, the difference I would consider would be what size school you want to go to - oh, and Wofford has some program where two people are selected each year to do independent study around the world - not sure exactly what it is called but that is unique. Have you considered Millsaps?

Well..not really. I am beginning to think I should though, as several people have recommended it to me. According to my teachers, it's expensive and not necessarily better than the Ole Miss honors college. Others have said it is better. I don't really know a lot about it.

OK - well now that you have mentioned Honors College then I would probably go to Ole Miss.

Both my sisters went to Millsaps and loved it, but don't think they necessarily got a better education than I did at a large state university. I do think they got a better "college experience" in the stereotypical view- and they seemed to have professors who spent alot of time helping to guide them in career choices and genuinely cared. Both of them still stay in contact with Millsaps professors 10+ years after graduation. That kind of relationship is hard to develop on a campus with large number of students.

You might want to consider other schools (including Wofford) that are good with merit/financial aid and then maybe the cost would not be as big of a factor. I hope that helps.

OP, my D visited and considered all 3, Barksdale (SMBHC), Wofford and Millsaps. Ultimately she only applied to Millsaps. She felt the campus and facilities were superior and she's pre-med so the hospital and med school next door to Millsaps helped. We loved Ole Miss and their HC Dean is one of the most personable and generous men I have ever met. Dean S.-G. is a prince of a man.

No offense taken, Packmom.
