What I am worried about the most are my essays for the honors college. I just recently submitted my application for the honors college, but I did not think that either of my essays (the “Thinking essay” or the “Doing essay”) were particularly strong or good, especially after reading some others online. So how good would my chances be of getting into the Honors College Program at USC given my above credentials, but assuming average or less than average essays? I know that my weighted GPA and SAT scores are above the average for the honors college. How heavily are the essays weighed in the admissions process?

My understanding is that the essays are heavily weighted. Your stats are excellent, and your essays are likely quite good (maybe you’re modest, or you may be second-guessing yourself). Your application is in on time, so try to be patient and just wait to see what happens.

Thank you LuckyCharms913. I was just worried, because I was an idiot and procrastinated on the essays, forcing me to do both of them in the two days before the application was due. I’m worried the quality is going to be sub par, because I was so rushed, and did not get anyone to look over them. Thank you for answering me so quickly! You’re right. I just need to be patient and see.

My D has been into creative writing since middle school and actually loves doing essays. She had what she considered just a decent GPA, but her test scores (1520/34) were pretty great. She also had a vast array of extracurriculars and I think at least nine AP classes. But I really think her essays sealed the deal for her and she received her acceptence letter into the Honors College this past Friday. Merry Christmas to everyone!
