Southern Academic schools with 3.76W and 2070?

Hahahahahaha… you realize that UGA and South Carolina are VERY similar, right?

Mom: I didnt say it meant under or over 1400. Nor did I say they wouldnt get in. I am just giving the broad brush analysis here and a dose of reality. I will tell you this much, a 1350 CR+Math, and a 700 writing score didnt cut it for my kid. Could we have been the anomaly? Not from what I hear. If someone gets into Vandy or W&L or Davidson with a 1250, its my view they have just as much chance/opportunity to succeed there as a kid with a 1450. I place very little emphasis on the SAT when considering who will succeed and who will fail in college. Its a very poor predictor of success, frankly. (A kid with a 1050 at Vandy etc, however, is likely going to struggle and need lots of intervention.)

Again, it doesnt hurt to apply to a couple of reach schools and see what happens. If they get in, great. If not, move on.

dpc: the joke is that the only school in the south that isnt “Southern” is Duke. High percentage of Northeastern kids. Not that there is anything wrong with being “Southern.”

UGA=Athens!

I’ve heard good things about Samford University. It is located in a beautiful part of Birmingham. The people in Alabama couldn’t be nicer. I know a lady attorney who attended undergrad there, and a friend is interested in it, so we drove by it while visiting UAB. It might be worth a look.

What about Elon?

The writing score is completely ignored by most schools. The important number is M+V and over 1400 puts you right in the running. I don’t know if the OP has that or not.

Emory has a huge number of students from the northeast, so doesn’t have as much “southern” feel.

“Hahahahahaha… you realize that UGA and South Carolina are VERY similar, right?”

WHOAH!!!

OP, This person has OBVIOUSLY never been to UGA. Ignore.

Mom: Agreed. Its an arbitrary and capricious process. 50 pts (which can be…what…2 or 3 answers on the test) can make a difference in getting in or not. Also, some schools have more female applicants than males and thus females have a higher hurdle to jump for admission. Again, I completely agree that the OP would do fine at any of these schools, its only a matter of being admitted. Just the same, its better to be realistic.

Packmom: Elon is a great school and with those stats, they might even offer a scholarship to the OP.

UGa is a fairly highly ranked LARGE public. It has some excellent programs. But its also one of the biggest party schools around. I know that from Princeton Review and from neighbors who went there and their kids who are there now. Its a HUGE school. Athens is a college town. Nothing but the college. Sorry, I’m not a Bulldog fan.

South Carolina has the number one International Business program in the country according to USNWR. If you don’t believe me, look for yourself. Its a much smaller school than Georgia, as state schools go. It also has some good programs, and its in Columbia…a fairly large city, state Capitol and only 2 hours to the beaches of South Carolina. 90 minutes to Charleston. I like it. But I do think Clemson is a better school, though USC people will greatly dispute that (and throw eggs at me.)

Old Dominion, UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, C of Charleston and Flagler are all nice and near the beach.

In South Carolina, Clemson>College Of Charleston>South Carolina in general
It definitely depends on what you want to study. For example, you wouldn’t go to C of Charleston for engineering and you would go to USC for International Business

I realize this post is almost a year old, but I had to chime in. Yes, I’ve been to UGA. I’m from Atlanta, who hasn’t? UGA and SC are very similar. Big schools, big sports, public flagships, etc. The only difference being Athens is strictly a college town and Columbia isn’t.

I’ll agree that Davidson is a reach. A friend with 2300+ SAT’s and 4.0 uw GPA and good EC’s got WL’d. Unless you are a URM, I think it’s unlikely.

Just for goof, I looked at history and this is where OP was at 5/2

“I’m basically between UMiami, SMU, and UGA. I got accepted to Colorado, FSU, USD, and Charleston as well, but I’ve broken it down to these 3.”

From what I can tell OP had sent the deposit to UMiami but was really having second thoughts. Keep in mind, these were self-reported acceptances…it says NOTHING of where OP applied, so we should make no assumptions where OP was NOT accepted.
