Best Southern School

I'm from L.A. cali and really wanna go to school in the south. So far i like U of Miami the best. Any other reconmendations?

Duke, Vanderbilt, UNC, Emory, Rice

But if U of Miami is a hard one for you, I don't know if you can get into the ones college mentioned. Maybe Rice. Emory is expensive. If you're going to pay that much for college, go some where better.

University of Miami is way overpriced.

UVA!!!!!!!!!!!!! how the hell can you forget this one

Well, Univ. of Miami is not really a "southern" school in culture. If you have the stats you can get a nice scholarship package there, but then again, if you DO have those kind of stats you'd probably be much better off at one of the above-mentioned colleges.

Rice "southern" but not cowboy-esque.

U of Miami is by no means a southern school. I am from Tennessee, and most of us don't even consider Vanderbilt a southern school.

Vanderbilt has alot of kids from across the country, i was impressed with the geographic diversity. if you want a real southern school you have to go to like sewanee -- university of the south or something like that.

quintessential Southern Schools. Well from NE perspective.....perhaps Southerners parse geographical locations and social customs but it seems clear to me.....Southern.

Duke carries the most "prestige" in the Southeast. You might also want to look at Davidson. Furman is supposed to be pretty good, too, depending on what your major will be. The University of South Carolina, University of Georgia, and College of Charleston Honors programs are supposedly okay depending on the kind of southern environment you want. Central and Southern Florida are a different feel than most of the "deep south," if that's the experience you for some reason want, but Rollins College looks pretty good.

im from long island, new york. i really didn't find vandy to be that southern. on my freshmen hall alone were 5 new yorkers and three kids from New Jersey. i don't think a school like Vandy can be compared to a true southern school. i wouldn't be comfortable at a school like "southern methodist" but going to a school like vandy isn't that hard to adjust. however -- the school is preppy so kids on the north shore of LI would fit in much better than the south shore as a whole.

SMU has a large out of state population as well.

Is SMU the one in Dallas? SO snobby.

Yeah, SMU is in Dallas. Supposedly the people there are snobby, but my two friends going there aren't at all. One is the sweetest guy I know, and the other is a girl who's more worried about her neopets not dying than most else...

Like all schools, it has all kinds of students. It does attract a large percentage of wealthy students, but even then you're talking about maybe 25%. And how would you know whether it was snobby or not if you don't know where it is?

My D goes to SMU and was originally a bit worried about the reputation of SMU in terms of the snobby-quotient. She confirms there are some of those, and some very wealthy students as well (not necessarily in the same group). However, she is very down to earth and not wealthy (I can confirm this!) and has found lots of friends there she feels comfortable with.

SMU and Baylor are supposed to be the snobby christians of Texas. And A&M is supposed to be the snobby rednecks. Oh, I love putting the stereotypes together. XD

SMU used to have a scholarship for IB students. :( They ran out of money for me!

I almost went to SMU for their awesome theatre department. They were actually in my final two when decision time came, but I felt like there was a big gap between the Meadows arts students and the rest of the student body. Looks like Meadows must've had a fairly low yield this year at least partially because of that. Five kids from my school got into Meadows in various arts disciplines and there were some others on the Theatre/Drama thread who were accepted. None went except for one who got in off the waiting list. Gotta hate it when a great department like that starts suffering from the prevailing political climate, but I guess that's thangs ...

umm if you guys haven't noticed. the op has ceased to post in this thread.
