southern cali v. chicago area

so i'm pretty sure i'm going to northwestern, but i've lived in southern cali since i was 8 years old. i lived in chicago for the first two years of my life so i dont remember but my parents love it.. but what should i expect? besides terrible weather of course. how is the culture different and such? im excited :]

No place like Cali IMO but Chicago (and Evanston) is still a pretty cool place to be.

Chicago/Evanston is very diffrent from so cal, IMO. I hate so cal but love Chicago (albeit the winter). You’ll find that car isn’t necessary for you to explore the city. It’s very walkable and there are lots to do, all without the hassle of driving around and trying to find parking! IMO, the midwesteners are slightly friendlier and more social. The image culture is less intense in chicago/evanston. You will find a lot less people showing off their wealth with fanzy cars (or pretending to be such with cars on credits). I also feel that so cal is rather anti-intellectual. I don’t get that vibe in Chicago.

alright guys socal isnt all image obsessed and anti intellectual by any strech of the imagination, people just tend to look and that stuff for entertainment i guess…im from LA, fromspending the summer in evanston i gathered that the area is def easier to walk around and explore, public transport is a million times better. both places have similar attractions, since chicago is a big town theres not a uge drop off of opportunities like if you were moving from LA to another midwest town

I love both Chicago and LA.

People seem nicer in the MW and Chicago has the big city/Midwest combo going on.
Public Transportation is better. You might not even need a car in Chicago. You actually get to see what SEASONS look like in Chicago. Cost of living is slightly cheaper too. Chicago sports fans can be kind of obnoxious though, although not as bad as NY fans.

LA weather is better obviously except maybe in some parts of Spring and Fall before it gets too humid and too cold. You can ski and surf on the SAME DAY if you want. Hmm the people are better looking haha. More diversity I think. Chicago seems pretty ethnically stratified.

Hmm thats all for now>
