<p>Wisconsin</a> Footballer Follows Grandma?s Example as Role Model</p>
<p>It would seem to be that being very public with one’s faith and making a show out of praying in public is <em>precisely</em> a Southern stereotype!</p>
<p>Yeah, the stereotype thing confused me.</p>
<p>I think the “defying the stereotype” is referring to the stereotype of football players as cocky and self-centered.</p>
<p>And not serious about academics. Think SEC</p>
<p>Well, I have to be honest, I’m sure this is a fine young man, but I didn’t see anything particularly noteworthy about him. OK, he’s into his religion. Whatever, that’s his business and neither impressive nor not-impressive. There was nothing in the profile to suggest that he was any kind of intellectual or academic star.</p>
<p>Any opportunity to take a swipe at the southerers/southern schools, barrons… It sure gets old.</p>
<p>I didn’t think it was taking a swipe so much as it was promoting someone from Wisconsin.</p>
<p>Another stellar athlete from Wisconsin who’s got brains, too. They must be doing somthing right in Madison. Must the cheese. But seriously, kudos to UW.</p>

<p>Post#5 looks like a swipe at the sec. Am happy for uw. My dh is a badger .That isn’t the issue.</p>
<p>Don’t forget the SEC includes Vanderbilt. If you say anything bad about the Vandy athletes, especially the basketball players, I might have to hunt you down and beat you up.</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>Oh, come on. Is the combination of being a good athlete and smart THAT rare that it is newsworthy? That’s not what I hear on CC! (To be clear, I don’t think it’s rare either.)</p>
<p>I’m still not getting what was so newsworthy about this young man, though.</p>
<p>Not sure why it’s newsworty on cc, but the article is from Athletes in Action. It’s what they are about.</p>

ONE WORLD TO REACH
Crime, Murder, Abuse, Racism, Scandal, Corruption. Every day our newspapers, the Internet and television tell the depressing, and sometimes tragic story of a world and its people that is far from realizing its created purpose.
Many athletes and coaches, once thought to be ideal role models for today’s youth, are swept up in a culture that seems to have abandoned limits and a moral compass for a “win at all cost” mentality. In the end the sports pages are no different than the front pages of our newspapers
ONE LANGUAGE OF SPORTS
For billions of people, the stadiums of the world serve as houses of worship. Whether on a sandlot or in a stadium, where there is a scoreboard, there is a crowd. Fans gather to cheer on their favorite team – be it professional, collegiate or Little League.
Sports is a universal language with the powerful ability to shape a culture, heal a nation, break down political, racial and economic barriers and restore national pride. Children dream of being the next LeBron James, Peyton Manning or Serena Williams. Sports speak a language that children around the world understand.
ONE MESSAGE OF VICTORY
Since 1966, AIA has committed to sharing a Victory beyond Competition that is found only in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Athletes and coaches around the world who are experiencing this life-changing relationship are telling the story of Jesus – to their teammates and fellow coaches, to hurting and needy people through their words and acts of compassion and kindness, and to the millions of people through the media. Over 650 staff members and 7,500 volunteers in 94 countries boldly proclaim Jesus Christ, deeply equip believers to lead and urgently mobilize ambassadors of Good News and Good Will in the fulfillment of the Great Commission.
As societies around the world look up to athletes as heroes, they must find those heroes looking up to God!
The global vision and mission of AIA is supported by the following commitments and strategies:
• Direct ministry with college, professional and top amateur athletes and coaches
• A comprehensive plan for ethnic and gender diversity
• Competing sport teams in teams such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track and field, swimming, rugby and more
• Integrating compassion and humanitarian aid with the sport platform
• Hosting outreach events at major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, Final Four, NBA All-Star Game, Olympics, World Cup of soccer and more
• A home office that features a sports complex and conference center with overnight accommodations for over 200 people”</p>
<p>He will be graduating before going to LA to play in the Rose Bowl. And a great young man. Team leader and much more.</p>
<p>*Henry has cherished his opportunity to play college football and earn a degree in business and consumer affairs. *</p>
<p>*And not serious about academics. Think SEC *</p>
<p>I think you need to investigate the facts before making such posts.<br>
Your first post suggests that it’s rare for a SEC football player to graduate before playing in a bowl game. It’s not. There are SEC football players completing their masters degrees while heading to bowl games.<br>
Last night Barrett Jones was honored for his position as an offensive lineman. He also graduated with a 4.0 in Accounting and is now working on his Masters. Last year, his QB was a finalist for a Rhodes Scholar…also working on a masters. Graduating isn’t rare…graduating early isn’t rare.</p>
<p>Is he really graduating early? A lot of football players red shirt their first year–so their senior year of football eligibility is their fifth year at college. Some need the extra time for their BA, others finish on time and start grad school.</p>
<p>Did not redshirt but had a medical redshirt after severe knee injury and 3 surgeries.</p>
<p>"After his surgically repaired right knee forced him to miss the 2008 season, Henry had high hopes for himself last fall. He felt great during spring practice, and even after having a third knee procedure less than six weeks before the opener, the cornerback remained confident about his comeback. "
Made B10 all academic all years he started.</p>
<p>I hope he gets onto the Denver Broncos team, or wherever the Tebowing takes place in the future.</p>
<p>I also don’t understand the reference to stereotypes. Maybe it’s because I don’t necessarily think jocks are dumb. This is a little more of a stereotype breaker because of the rarity - excellence in two areas. <p>Maybe he deserves a break - this is the first positive press the Wisconsin defensive secondary has had this season! :</p>
