Spanier in Top 10 Highest Paid Public University Heads

Found this interesting, given PSU's budget crisis. Spanier has said that all levels of the university must do some belt tightening and everyone will bear some of the pain, so I truly hope that really does include everyone - including himself.

(Scroll down to the charts at the bottom)

Spanier’s compensation is not out of line. What is sad is how much higher Joe Paterno’s salary is.

First of all, Spanier doesn’t get paid even half that of the President of OSU.

Second, its not really up to Spanier to decide what HE gets paid…its up the to board of trustees. Therefore, they have the power to cut his pay. However, most corporations tend toward the side of eliminating positions and freezing pay, before they cut someone’s salary.

Third, Joe Paterno has been at Penn State for almost half a century. I think by now he deserves whatever they are going to pay him.

Fourth, Joe Paterno doesn’t make even close to what coaches like Nick Saban and Urban Meyer made last year.

Fifth, they football program makes enough money to fund almost all the other varsity athletic teams (other than Men’s and Women’s Basketball I think). If the football program isn’t successful, some of those programs get cut. I don’t think you can argue Penn State football would be as successful as it is today, and on that note a money making venture, if it were not for the last 40 years of Joe Paterno running the program. Also, he has turned down bigger offers from pro teams, which says a great deal about his commitment to the university.
