Spanish 260

Has anybody on here taken this course? I am considering pursuing the hispanic linguistics major and this is the gateway course. I just completed 203, although I already have credit for 203 and 204 through subject tests. To pursue the major at all, I have to take 260 this next semester but I'm worried that I will not be prepared for it. I will be in Chapel Hill with not much to do for a month and a half, and I am planning on teaching myself the 204 material with my 203/204 book and also teaching myself bio 101 from an AP bio book to take the placement test to get credit for my psych major.

If I complete the 204 material on my own and maybe try to get used to reading spanish newspapers or short, easy books, do you think I will be prepared for the class? How intense are the readings?

I am considering this major as well. I haven’t taken 260 yet, but I have taken 204. I don’t think you could self-study the 204 course, IMO. I really, really love taking Spanish, and I’m absolutely positive the only reason I got an A was because I worked my butt off and the teacher recognized that. The course was full of really nitty-gritty grammar and some of the tests were really quite challenging–to the degree that I don’t think you could have parsed out all those complexities of the subjunctive on your own. Now, I’m not sure how much I actually benefitted from all that nit-picking, but it could come back to bite you in the ass later.

Thanks for the input - one of my friends also said the same thing. Do you think it would be ok for me to take 204 and 255 at the same time? I’m still planning on studying over the summer so I have a head start, but I really don’t want to have to wait until junior year to take 300 and above. Even if I don’t do the major, I will still want to take the higher level spanish classes for my own sake.
