Spanish 3 yrs vs 4 yrs for top 20 school (w/ 4.0 (top 1%) 800s Subject Test)

I have taken three years of Spanish and trying to decide whether I should take Spanish 4 Honors for Senior year.

I took 8 APs (have three 5s and one 4s; waiting four more scores to come out this July) taking 5 APs next year.

Though if I take Spanish 4 honors, it would be only to look "great" in college application; please consider I am native English speaker.

So far..
UW GPA: 4.0
SAT Subject: Chem 760 Japanese 800 Math II 800
SAT 1900 (Need to improve a lot; I got 2050 highst on my practice SAT)

Is taking Spanish 4 Honors is somewhat "crucial" or "better to have than not to have"?
Do you have any suggestion?

I will apply some IVY (though not like "I must get in or die"):)

EC
three years Class Prez
Swim Team captain etc

Completing level 4 in high school may help you place into a higher level Spanish course in college if you choose to continue taking Spanish courses (or practice Spanish on your own by talking in Spanish to Spanish speakers or reading stuff written in Spanish).

If you look at top schools requirements, it usually will say 3 years required, 4 years preferred. To me that makes 4 years of foreign language something you want to aim for to be a preferred candidate. Now, that said, they are going to look at your whole program of study along with stats etc. Since you have such a strong gpa and program, it seems, you might be fine with one weak area in your program. Is there some compelling reason not to do the preferred work? Does it conflict with some other core class, or is it just conflicting with an elective? I’d weight the core requirement more than the elective, usually. But is this elective something you are really eager to take or does it further an interest you have? Just questions to think about.

From your Japanese SATII it looks like you’ve already got a foreign language under your belt.

BrownParent<<<Thanks a lot. I agree with you. The reason I am considering Spanish 4 is that many elite school “prefers” a candidate with 4 years of foreign language. I am trying to fit in my schedule.

ucbalumnus<<<thanks! Even though I (despised or disliked) Spanish though I hope this negativity changes

Oopss…correction…I am NOT native English speaker.
