Some of the colleges I’m aiming for really like to see at least 4 years of Language. I’m a junior rn and I’ve completed up to Spanish 3. I did Spanish 2( passed with a 99) and 3 (passed with a 93) through online summer courses. My plan was to continue Spanish 4 junior year to do AP Spanish next year. The thing is because of terrible scheduling issues the only time I can take pre calc is the only time I can take Spanish 4. I have four options: take Spanish 4 online and do Pre-Calc in person, Take pre-calc online and do Spanish 4 in person, Skip Spanish 4 and go into Ap Spanish senior year but self study it through this year and do pre calc in person, or just quit Spanish all together. The thing about taking Spanish 4 online is that I’m worried my conversational skills won’t be able to improve mainly bc I’ve taken my last Spanish classes all online I barely have been able to actually speak Spanish to someone else. Spanish 4 at my school is all about speaking it as well. However, I’m worried about taking pre-calc online because of AP calc next year. I don’t want to end up struggling in AP calc bc I didn’t really have a teacher. I could self study Spanish 4 which would allow me to take some other classes I want to take and I could practice with my friends in Spanish 4 but I’m still scared I’ll do bad in AP Spanish. Quitting it seems like a waste of time. What should I do?
If I self study Spanish 4 I can at least be in line with the curriculum they teach at my school it’s just I’m not sure how I’ll be able to get my speaking skills up.
Spanish 4 and precalculus seem to be common enough courses to take together, so there must be something else about your schedule that is causing the scheduling problem.
What other courses are you taking, and which ones are blocking you from taking Spanish 4 and precalculus in other time slots?
Spanish 4 is only offered 5th hour. Other then 5th hour I can take pre-calc 2nd hour, 3rd, or 6th hour. However I have Ap Chem 2nd and 3rd hour and Ap physics 6th hour. Typically my school always had pre-calculus 4th hour so I planned my schedule with that in mind. I don’t really want to drop physics or chem either since I’m really enjoying those classes. Even if I drop one of those classes I would most likely have to take a online class 4th hour anyways bc the classes offered 4th hour are classes I’ve taken or are not for my grade. Also there’s a chance some classes might be full with students and there wouldn’t be a spot for me.
Which one of Spanish 4 or precalculus has the better in-person teacher?
Also, are AP chemistry and AP physics offered at other time slots?
Ap Chem is only offered 2nd and 3rd, and Ap physics is offered 3rd but with Ap chem that’s not doable. I’ve heard pretty great things about both teachers but majority of the people I have asked are just focusing on how it will affect me in the future. I want to apply to some top universities, and I know 3-4 years of Spanish can really help me standout (I do speak another language natively but idk if that helps). However, I will probably go into computer science for college so calculus does matter more for that. I do have an interest in premed and knowing Spanish would definitely help with taking care of patients if I go down the medical field. Because of Spanish 4, I’ll only be able to take 3 aps this year which makes me worried if my schedule doesn’t look rigorous enough as well. I have experience taking Spanish classes online since I’ve basically been teaching myself majority of Spanish but I don’t have that with math. Even though I’m skilled enough to be able to understand it by just doing homework I still easily get really bored with math which leads me to struggle. I’m afraid with taking it online. I do have more resources for pre calc online then in Spanish. The main thing is I’m only worried about my conversational skills in Spanish and I feel like just quitting as whole would just be a waste of time. I just don’t want to make a choice that will affect my grades though.
There is this one program I might be able to do pre-calc in where I can see myself succeeding as I’ve taken a class in this program and felt like I learning a lot without being overwhelmed. However my other friends that are taking pre-calc online we’re given another program which I’ve taken a class in and did not enjoy. I’m asking my counselor if we can chose a program bc if we are I would feel much more comfortable doing pre calc online.
Any heritage speaker friends to practice Spanish with outside of class?
Nope. I do have friends in Spanish 4 but that’s pretty much it. Spanish 4 online does give a few oral assignments and quizzes but it just doesn’t seem to be enough to actually help.
I would bump one of your AP science classes to senior year if it means you could take pre calc and Spanish in school. Doubling up on science isn’t necessary if it’s messing up your schedule.
Move AP Chem to senior year. Doubling up on a core subject at the expense of another subject is not preferable.
Online Spanish is the least preferable option as the speaking/listening is not easily replicated online.
I would not recommend taking two AP Science classes at once. What is the reasoning for this? Nobody expects this and you don’t have to take every AP science class.
I just like Chemistry and Physics. I’m not really taking them to take every Ap science class. It’s really just for enjoyment. I have talked to some teachers and they have said that one of the pre-calc teachers is doing a thing where he teaches/helps out the students taking pre-calc online. I’m either going to drop Ap physics or chem or just so pre calc online since it will mean I might still have a teacher in some way. I definitely am not taking Spanish online bc I know I won’t do good in AP Spanish.
Why not take it next year? (Assuming you are a junior)
Which class?
Either of the AP Sciences so you can fit SPanish and Precalc in person
If I drop Ap physics I’ll probably just take it next year. Ap chem on the other hand I probably won’t be able to bc it’s a two hour class and I really want to take this certain program that takes up like two hours of my schedule and with my other classes I plan to take it just won’t work. I could just drop Spanish but not sure if that be worth it.
So moving AP Physics to next year is a possible solution to your problem so you can take the others in person this year which would set you up for better success.
Yeah I might just do that. I am really enjoying physics rn so that’s why I kinda am hesitant. However I’m less nervous of taking pre calc online since a teacher is kinda teaching it to the kids taking it online. At this point I just need to decide between the two.
