special events

My D was accepted EA and received a likely letter. The letter stated that she would be invited to some special events for outstanding students like herself in the following months. The only thing she has been invited to was Explore Carolina which I gather all admitted students are invited to. So were the events the letter alluded to just empty promises?

My S got the same type of letter back in December, and has only been
invited to Explore Carolina. Is UNC finished offering merit scholarships?

I'm sorry to say, that I think Carolina wants to be EVERYONE's friend. This is a fault on their part. They send out too many messages and get people's hopes up, only to be sort of disappointed when things don't pan out. Everyone wants to feel special. We are just teenagers after all. Yes, I do think that your D received an empty promise.
I still love Carolina and will probably go there, but I wish they'd be more careful about these sorts of things.

I agree with Powderpuff. Our S got the same likely letter and Honors and has not had an invite to any event. I'm assuming Explore is for IS and he is OOS. I think too much hype can inflate expectations, especially if you don't follow through.

That still doesn't make sense to me. Why not try calling the admissions office? Even if their answer isn't what you want to hear, they will most likely answer your question.

I've mentioned this in another post but in the past UNC held a number of (approx eight) Explore Carolina sessions each year. However, two of these were a bit different in that they were reserved for those students receiving merit aid offers and/or students they were really wooing and featured the only overnight opportunities. These sessions included events for the students and parents starting midday the first day and ending with a dinner and entertainment in the Chancellor's Box at the top of Kenan Stadium followed by a continental breakfast and Q&A session the next morning.

The invitations went out in late March and the events were held in early April...like the first week or so. The remaining events were held a bit later. I think the reason for timing these special sessions is that these students will need to be committing somewhere by May 1 and UNC wanted to make sure they rolled out the red carpet as best they could. It was honestly well organized and very impressive for a public school.

relaxdad

We're OOS as well and the session we attended was heavily OOS families. Be patient.

eadad, talk about intuition. Our S got an invite today (3/17) to "Carolina Crossroads" on 4/12. Apparently, he had received online (UNC Homepage) invites to "Explore Carolina" as well for 3/26 or 3/28, but didn't mention it. It says its for "outstanding prospective students", but no mention of scholarship consideration. It also says that its a "first-ever event" and I don't see anything about it in CC history. It says something about meeting Carolina alumni and area employers at the Research Triangle Park. I assume that this is what mbogtog was refering to as his letter was worded the same way.

I received a likely letter in December, and at the time, my parents felt it held the promise of scholarship money/Honors program. That hasn't been the case (much to everyone's disappointment, lol), but I have been invited to three events, not including Explore Carolina- a play thing (I started a thread about it), a science thing (Science Spectrum- there were Juniors at the event, though, so it wasn't just for prospective students), and something called "Carolina Behind the Scenes" which is to take place next Friday from 8:30 to 4 (I'm missing school). Still, many of my friends haven't been invited to anything, so it's unclear to me how UNC "picks and chooses" who attends these events. I'm still hoping some $$$ might turn up, but who knows? I have thoroughly enjoyed all the events, and I'm looking forward to next week, but this whole process is kind of a mystery.

RelaxDad,
My son also received the Carolina Crossroads invite in today's mail. He had previously gotten an email inviting him to the same event. I bet your son also received that email. If he's like my son, he just never mentioned it to you. Maybe we'll see you there.

BTW, I don't think this event has anything to do with merit $. I fear we missed the boat on that. My son loves UNC's spirit but it's an expensive choice (OOS). My son has large merit offers elsewhere, including a full ride. He sits here cheering on UNC's bball team and dreams of next yr. Sure wish some $ were offered so this school would be more in line moneywise with his other choices (since he has grad school to pay for).

jrzgrlmom, we are OOS too. Like your's, our S was offered full rides at a few schools because of NMS, but none he's seriously considered. He was initially in the running for Robertson, but that didn't pan out. I didn't really think that this was anything but another "keep us in mind" event. Despite the lack of merit $, UNC is still a pretty good value (even at OOS prices).

My dad called and the man on the Carolina Crossroads invitation (Mr. Paterson) told him only the top 1500 out of the 7000 accepted students have been invited to Carolina Crossroads.
