My son got the letter saying he would be invited to these, but he did not get a scholarship letter.

I would like to know as well

I'll go ahead and email them about it then post the response

Great; thanks. I'll be very interested to hear what they say.

Me too! Thanks for emailing. =)

No problem... I emailed the other day about some AP info and they were very helpful

talk about quick reply:

Colton,

We will have an event called “Explore Carolina” that is for all admitted students to UNC. “Explore” will focus on a typical day in the life of a Carolina student and include discussions with faculty, staff, and students and give you the opportunity to hopefully learn more about life at UNC. We called last night to congratulate you on your admission and to make you aware that you would be getting an invitation to Explore Carolina in the future. We hope to see you at one of the Explore Carolina events. Congratulations on your strong work up until this point and your admission into Carolina! If you have any other questions please feel free to let me know. Take care!

Andrew

Thanks, egghead!

Egghead, who did you e-mail? I had a couple of questions myself regarding the likely letters/scholarships. If all accepted students can attend "Explore Carolina," how do the likely letter recipients stand out? (In particular, how is the apparently exclusive "Be a Carolina Student for a Day" different from "Explore Carolina"?) Gosh, I was thinking the likely letters held promise of at least small scholarships for the students who received them. Thanks for your response.

I emailed the assistant director of the office of admissions

AlumDad/ Cat119

The admissions office in the past has held about seven or eight one day "Explore Carolina" sessions but set aside one or two sessions for the students they were apparently really recruiting/wooing. These sessions included a more complete presentation for prospective students and their parents. In the past these select sessions have included overnight stays in dorms with a student host, and a dinner with entertainment for all in the club at the top of Kenan Stadium. The two sessions were the only ones that offered overnight dorm visits as well which also set them apart. Perhaps these are the sessions now being called "Be a Carolina Student for a Day."

When we were there in 2004, it seemed that everyone we spoke to had a student who had been offered a major scholarship like the Carolina, Davie, Pogue or in our case, Morehead. This may not always be the case but that is how it was when we took part in the session.

The day was hosted by the then Director of Admissions and had separate parent and student sessions with students attending classes and taking tours while the parents toured and had more in depth sessions and panel group discsussions with current UNC students and with the Parents' Association staff. The students who were staying overnight met their hosts late in the day and all convened for dinner shortly after. We met up with our kids the next morning at a continental breakfast and Q&A session hosted by admissions and were on our own by about 10:30 or 11:00 AM that day.

It was very well done and before I learned that the session we attended was a "special" session and one of only two that were like that, I was REALLY impressed that UNC would roll out the red carpet the way they did for ALL admittted students. The admissions staff informed me that indeed they were not all quite like that and that the other sessions were not quite as long nor as in-depth and did not offer overnight dorm stays.

There were people last year on CC that didn't hear about scholarships until mid to late Spring so I would not take the lack of notification as a "no" quite yet.

I would strongly recommend attending if offered the chance, especially if you are still not sure that UNC is the place for you or your S.

so even for students accepted early action, they might receive scholarship money in the spring? for some reason, i thought it was like a two-round type of thing, where early action people get scholarship stuff earlier, and reg decision people get stuff in the spring

Thanks, eadad!

an comment on what misstina said?

My son had 1/2 day today and saw that he received an email inviting him to attend the "Explore Carolina" program (March dates). But this program doesn't seem to be limited to those who received the "distinguished application" letter. The email says it's open to all admitted students who are undecided on their college decision... He's excited to attend (has already been to campus) but disappointed he doesn't seem to be in the running for a scholarship.

Maybe the letter was just sent to make distinguished applicants feel special
