Special Question For International Students

In the Harvard academics section in the Common App, there is an ‘optional’ question for international applicants: “What specific plan do you have, if any, for using the education you hope to receive? (0-50 words)”

I find it interesting that this question is only for applicants outside the US and Canada (if someone has any suggestions for the reason please do tell). I am unsure of my future plans and if I did write an answer to this question, it would be a restatement of a vague plan for the future previously mentioned in my application. Unlike the Harvard Supplemental Essay, is this essay truly ‘optional’ or should I write an answer to it even though I pretty much have nothing new to say?

International applicants are expanding options outside their home county/region. Harvard wants to know why you chose to apply to Harvard and why you chose to apply to Harvard over all the other fine universities in the US. You have little space, so make it short and sweet. Answering the question is as optional as the other optional questions.
