Specialised High Schools in NYC

My family is moving to brooklyn this summer. There ain’t any good public schools in my district so I wonder whether it is possible to apply for specialised schools. I am a US citizen and have straight As. However, I am currently in grade 10. I have heard that the only entry point for these specialised schools is grade 9. Is that true?

First, don’t use 'ain’t ’ either in writing or speaking, especially if you want to get admitted to a selective school program.
Brooklyn has lots of good schools.
Look at the IB programs.
I’m afraid having straight A’s even in all honors/AP won’t get you into a specialized high school, there’s a competition for 8th graders that many prepare for years.

NYC Specialized high schools will accept entering 9th and 10th graders, thats it. Your score on the SHSAT is the ONLY thing admissions looks at for acceptance. If you haven’t taken the SHSAT yet, you have virtually no chance of acceptance.

NYC has dozens and dozens of great non-specialized public schools. Do your homework.

BTW, in your other thread you state “I am studying in the best school in my country,” and in this thread you state, “I am a US citizen.” Can you explain what you mean?

Sorry for not making it clear. There are indeed excellent schools in NYC. However, what I meant was that in my district choices are limited. I doubt whether good schools accept transfers after 10th grade.

I was born in the US but moved to another country.

Acceptance rate at the specialized high schools is lower than at Stanford and Yale per today’s NYTs. I would look into private schools if possible, although the odds are not great there either.

You could apply for an IB school. Their intake is 11th grade and since you’ve been schooled abroad you’d have reasonable reasons for applying. There are several in Brooklyn. Look quickly though because the application cycle must have started (not sure when it starts/ends but it can’t be far from now).
