Specific jobs in sociology

Hello.

I need to work for a couple of years before I can go back to school for my Masters. I am trying to figure out what my options are out there right now. What kind of jobs can I get with a Bachelors in sociology that will pay at least 35,000-40,000 a year? I am not looking for negative comments and I know that government jobs are typical. However, I am wondering what kind of government jobs exactly? Or other jobs? I have an idea of the different fields that are available but am trying to get a feel or what the jobs entail or what they are specifically. I am not focused on something directly related to sociology as I want to eventually get alternative certification to teach instead. This is just temporary.

Depending on where you live, state work or work for local agencies. Easy.

I live in the city. As I stated, I am asking about what specific kinds of job possibilities there would be. I know working for the government is the big “go-to” but there are tons of different govt jobs. I am wondering what specific positions are possibilities for a sociology major. Doing what for local agencies?

Parole officer is one.

Also, you may want to take a look at this helpful book on careers for sociology majors: http://www.amazon.com/Great-Jobs-Sociology-Majors/dp/0071544828/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324708103&sr=8-1

“I am wondering what specific positions are possibilities for a sociology major.”

This right here is your problem. You’re thinking of your job search in terms of your college major and not what actual skills you have to offer an employer. There are tons of great [careers in sociology](http://www.studentadvisor.com/pages/careers-in-sociology-what-can-i-do-with-a-sociology-degree), but that degree you have only marks a little check box that you have knowledge …a resume shows that you have examples of success and valuable skills. What prior work experience do you have? Did you do any internships? What industries have you worked in before? The competition for government jobs is pretty stiff. What interested you most in sociology?

The thing with sociology (or any humanities discipline) is that you can easily apply what you’ve learned in school to almost any job. Once you answer those questions we can give you some better suggestions for possible government jobs. Good luck!
