I personally participate in both. Im not particularly good in either, and want to know anyone has ideas for focusing one of the other.
I know success i either one is probably more important, but in general, do colleges prefer one over the other? Thanks for Answering.
No, one is not preferred. It is what you get out of the EC that matters and how you reflect that in your application. Speech and debate is typically a solo effort (unless you are in Duo activities) while Model UN is often a team approach. Do you enjoy one more than another? From your post, it sounds like you are just doing it to have something on your app. I think S&D is brutal if you are not good at it - which I am thinking means you are less likely to enjoy those very long days at S&D events. Or do you think you will get better at it with effort? And even if you do get better, will you enjoy it? In Model UN, you have a group approach to solving the problem a lot of times. Both can give you great skills - at speaking, presenting, persuading, researching and team work (Model UN), you can make great friends in either of these activities as you spend lots of time with the same kids doing the same thing. I would really try to pick one you actually enjoy more. If you don’t enjoy either, find something else to do. Don’t waste four years catering to a college app. Find a passion, have some fun, get into something that interests YOU.
Thanks
