Speech-Language Pathology

If I wanted to become a speech-language pathologist, what would be the best to major in? A friend told me "linguistics", but would that have to be supplemented by a minor/double major in a science-related course? What IS linguistics, anyways?

Thanks for your help!

Major in Communication Disorders or Speech Pathology.
Some schools that offer this major: Northeastern, Maryland, NYU, Rutgers, Northwestern, Syracuse.

SLP is usually an 'upper level' undergrad major - many a school that offers it has a seperate application process - usually around the end of your sophmore year - plan on going to grad school tho - to be able to work in the field - great field also BTW!!

The University of Redlands in California has an excellent communicative disorders undergraduate program as well. Here's the link: http://www.redlands.edu/x247.xml

linguistics is basically the study of language...very broad topic but very good for entering speech pathology/speech therapy...

Visit the American Speech-Language hearing Association

for answers to FAQs, etc.

im also wanting to major in this and loyola college in maryland has a great speech language program.im also applying to Syracuse which has the program as well...penn state northeastern and bu are other choices and they have communication disorders programs.....as for linguistics im also looking into that for my schoools that dont offer the speech progrram

SDSU & CSU FULLERTON have speech pathology programs.

You can't get a job with just an bachelor's degree. So even if you don't major in Communicative Disorders or Speech Pathology make sure you take the required courses to get into Graduate school.

Thank you so much for all of your replies!!

--update--
When I posted this, I had already applied to all of my schools. Upon further research, none offer Communication Disorders or SLP (ahhh small LACs!) And only two offer Linguistics. Yikes.

Am I screwed? Is it imperative that I apply to some schools with programs ASAP? And if I don't go to one of the ones with Linguistics, what on earth should I major in?

ACC you have a couple of options here - when accepted and you decide which small lac you want to go to - you can go for a year and in the mean time really figure out if SLP is what yu really and truly want - and then apply for transfer for the next year to a school that has the program that you want..................

You could also apply NOW to a couple of the schools that interest you that have this program. The first 2 years is going to be the gen ed requirements anyways - and maybe they lower level/survey classes in this major - so you still have plenty of time to figure this out.

It will be very difficult to pursue this field without doing the undergrad piece - as you would be required to at least 'make up' some of the missed requirements prior to going to grad school - unless you intend to pursue a second BS in this field - if this is truly the field you want to pursue.

In actuality - you could pursue whatever degree you want to in a LAC - and then do the undergrad requirements for SLP afterwards - but that is somewhat the long route to go - and linquistics would not necessarily 'help' you to become a SLP.

Good luck and keep us up to date

Thank you so much for yoru advice JeepMOM! I decided that I might as well apply to a school or two that offers it, to keep my options open. So I'm applying to Northeastern and possibly Redlands.

ACC - may I ask where you are from - state I mean ??

If you are looking at Northeastern - in Boston - you may also want to consider UNH as well - has a great SLP program - ECU in NC also has a very good program (alot cheaper too lol)

I'm from Texas. I would just go to UT but it is too big for me. I've decided that I don't want schools with over 20,000 undergrads.

I will definitely research the schools you mentioned. My only qualm, though, is that I doubt that either of them can be completed through the common application. I'm not averse to completing them, but I would feel positively awful asking my overworked teachers/counselors to write me more recommendations.

Just curious, are you a SLP?

ACC no I am not an SLP - but have several friends who are and have also been helping another student with the SLP education process. I do work in the medical field tho.

If you don't mind staying in Texas, Stephen F. Austin has a good Speech-Language Pathology program.

Vanderbilt has a great Deaf Ed program! (#1 Special Ed program in the nation). I am taking a few audiology, speech dev, etc. classes right now, and they are great.
