Speech pathology

I live in NY and I attend a CC here, I will hopefully be transferring to a 4 year university either August 2018(if I take alot of classes during my winter/summer to speed up the process) if I am not able to then I will graduate by December 2018, take a semester off and begin at my 4 year university August 2019. My gpa is a 3.2. I am currently an English major, I will be getting my associates in that. But I will like to get my bachelors in communication and science disorder because I aspire to be come a speech pathologist. Do you know any 4 year universities that have this specific major? I will like to go away for my 4 year college, so any schools that are dormitory would be great in NY or even out of state thanks!

Can you afford an OOS school? Going out of state is very expensive. You should look to your own state schools to keep your costs down because it is a long program.

The speech pathology programs in the US are very competitive and difficult. You need strong English mechanics especially grammatical skills. The profession requires a Bachelor’s and Masters degree in order to work as a speech pathologist. It would be at least 6 years of coursework, not to mention your clinical practicum and Clinical Fellowship year. To gain entrance into a Masters program, your English scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) must be exceptional. @thumper can give you anything I’ve missed.

Are you an international student?
I ask because I am trying not to point out the obvious: your English grammatical skills are very weak for speech pathology. Unless you plan on working with monolingual language clients in a language other than English, you would have to beef up your grammar skills. Speech pathologists do teach grammar.

(ex: There is no such word as “alot” and your knowledge of future tense is pressing.)

Lots of colleges have majors in communication science, communication disorders or speech and hearing sciences.

SUNY Plattsburgh, Fredonia, and New Paltz all have communication sciences & disorders majors (a close friend of mine who is currently an SLP went to SUNY New Paltz). Buffalo State College has a speech-language pathology major, and the University at Buffalo and College at Cortland both have speech & hearing sciences majors. Those are all slightly different names for essentially the same thing - so you have lots of options within New York state for these majors.

In addition, Queens College has a communication sciences & disorders major, City College has a speech pathology major, and Brooklyn College has a degree program in speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech and hearing science. City College has residence halls for sure; I am not sure about Queens and Brooklyn Colleges.

College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. It has a very strong Communications Disorders program with a Masters and is generous with financial aid. Good luck.

@“aunt bea” my mom will be taking out a loan for me if i do go to an out of state school. and no im not an international student, but thanks for the advice.

A number of CUNY schools (I think Queens, Hunter, Lehman to name a few) and SUNY schools (I think New Paltz, Buffalo and others) have speech pathology programs if you are looking for a lower cost options. Also I believe that Adelphi, Hofstra, Iona, Mercy. LIU I have speech pathology. If you do some basic research you should come up with many options. You will also need to see which schools (if any) will accept you into their program as a transfer student.

Here is a list with a lot of the schools that have speech pathology. I don’t put a lot of value in rankings but it is a good list of schools. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/pathology-rankings

Keep in mind that you will need to go on for a Master’s degree before you can get your license in this field.
