I was wondering how much money people are bringing for their first year at Wake.. I'm talking personal spending money.. not Deacon Card Dollars. I need to know how much I should save up! Haha, thanks...

I'm probably not the typical Wake student, but I hardly needed anything other than Deacon Dollars. But I didn't have a car, either.

What is a good amount of Deacon Dollars per semester? (Wake recommends $1000, just wanted your take on it.)

Wow, $1,000? With the new meal plan, I wouldn't put that much on it, personally. I think that freshman were required to buy, what, 14 meals a week (or was it 11). If it was 14, you're probably not going to eat at Benson or Subway a whole lot because that'll mean wasting meals that're already paid for. Plus, you can always add money to your deacon card (last year, the place where you added money was beside the pit, but they're remodelling the pit this summer, and so I don't know if it'll stay there). I would put on enough money for books (which can run as high as about $450 or $500 dollars, especially if you're going to be taking one or more sciences) and then maybe $50 to $100 extra and plan to recharge the card if you run low.

Also, any meals that you don't use by the end of the semester will not roll over to the spring semester, but any money that you put on your deacon card that isn't used by the end of the semester will roll over to the spring semester. So if you do put on a bunch of money and don't use it, it wont go to waste.

Okay thanks. I didn't realize that the Deacon Dollars would cover book costs, perhaps that is why they recommend so much.

Okay, besides Deacon Dollars, how much is everyone bringing for personal spending money? Like on their own debit card or something? I have just heard mixed reviews.. some people say $1000, some say $3500 and then I heard the other day someone said $6000 minimum. Mhmph!

just open a wachovia checking account (they have free student accounts) and you can have your parents send money whenever you need it.

haha yea right.

well, with my parents at least, i guess "whenever they think you need it" would be more accurate.

opening a wachovia account, putting in the 2k i'll have made this summer.

thank you for the answer i've been looking for this whole time, decisions05... haha... sounds good to me! ive already opened a wachovia checking account and i'm putting on the money i'll have made this summer too. :D

I just looked back through my checkbook, and I have down that I spent just about $600 during my first semester.
