Route 20 through central NY is really beautiful. Hits several of the Finger Lakes as well as rolling hills and quaint towns.
Loved driving up the taconic in the fall, and I-70 in Colorado in the winter if the roads were clear
The eastern part and Midwest are such a different animal that the central/west coast. Both beautiful in their own way!
Oh, I miss the Finger Lakes. We used to like doing a Sunday drive there, often involving winery stop(s). Each vineyard/lake association had a nice pamphlet, showing wineries on each side of that lake. We liked our bicycle map that showed the roads that interconnected Cayuga Lake (Ithaca, Cornell) and Seneca Lake.
I don’t remember some of the West Coast drives. Years ago, we bicycled from Mendocino to San Francisco on Highway 1 (our honeymoon was a bike trip starting in SF and going through the Napa, Sonoma, Alexander Valleys and then along to Mendocino and back to SF).
But, earlier this month, we had a glorious drive from Glymur to Reykjavik that winds along the ocean.
My daughter transferred colleges and I much prefer the drive to her new school on low traffic backroads instead of the busy interstate we had to take to her old school. I actually look forward to the drive. It goes through farm land and small towns and a little bit of mountain scenery.
Thanks for mentioning Quechee and Woodstock - 2 of my all time favorite places. I wish I was there now to see the leaves and feel the peace that always surrounds me when I’m there.
Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper is pretty great.
US-89 from Yellowstone to Glacier, also great.
Another shout out for the 395 along the eastern Sierras. Always amazing. Very fortunate to have the Sierras in our ‘back yard’!
