Sport at Smith

I played competetive Volleyball for 8 years, but because of a knee injury i won't be able to play varsity...are there others chances to play Volleyball at Smith?

No idea what intramurals are like.

Women's basketball was also founded at Smith, first played in 1892.

I believe she is in charge of intramurals. GL!

I did some lobbying the other day to have rugby and fencing upgraded from [very good] club teams to becoming official school athletics teams: has to do with budget allocations coming from different sources. It's a non-trivial question in that official teams have access to the trainers, covered medical care, etc.

I did some lobbying the other day to have rugby and fencing upgraded from [very good] club teams to becoming official school athletics teams}}

The rugby team won't go for it. That will mean they won’t be able to get loaded after every game b/c they'll have to adhere to Smith athletic rules.

I keep hearing this at the schools I visit: Beware the Rugby Team! or "Oh, well, you know, she plays rugby," as an explanation for finding a stash of alcohol. The girl later explained it by saying they're usually in so much pain after the game that they need a little vodka. I had been thinking rugby would be fun, but maybe not. Any other opinions/experiences/thoughts on why rugby=alcohol?

The girl later explained it by saying they're usually in so much pain after the game that they need a little vodka.}}

Yeah, well, that doesn't explain the drinking before the game :)

Rugby's HUGE at Smith along with crew. But anyway, yea, the rugby team tends to drink quite a bit according to a friend. She doesn't care about it (occasionally complains) but she drinks anyway for the pain and just because she can stomach a lot.

Don't let that turn you off from playing a sport that you love. What you do out in the field is more important than what your teammates did last night. Teamwork!

Would a young lady have to have experience to try crew?

[Would a young lady have to have experience to try crew?]

no, not at all. that's why there's a novice team, on which i rowed for a year. it's a great experience.

can pretty much anyone be on the novice team? or are there "try outs"?? i'm very interested in joining crew at smith, but i don't have any experience...

crew is amazing, I had no experience either. You start out with about 40-50 girls who have never rowed before...but its a huge time commitment.

do it!

What do you mean by 'huge time commitment'? 10 hours/week? 20? I'm a little nervous about being up at 4:30 every day - I love to sleep!

If you love to sleep, crew is not for you.

In fact, if you love to sleep, Smith itself will be challenging. It can be done...but.

Academics, EC's, social life, sleep: pick any three. At most. Sometimes only two.

Okay, maybe it's like this: each of the above categories you can spend up to four chips on. You have ten to twelve chips. Distribute as you will.

the first semester eases you into it--practices are mostly afternoons. but it is serious: practices and/or regattas 6 days a week, september-november and february-may.

Crew takes up about 3 hours a day, and its on saturdays too...so lets do the math.... 3*6=18 hours of your week devoted to crew. Fall does ease you into it, but by then you will know if it's for you or not.

Sometimes just taking an Exercice course is fun too. But Smith definitely is challenging....
