Sports Management Majors--Hype or Substance

My wife works for a professional sports team, the real deal, not minor league. And I can tell you that most people who work there knew someone and that’s how they got in. If you don’t know anyone, then interning is probably the best way to get in.

Other than the players, coaches and the executives, the pay is LOW for the rank and file employees. 30-40% lower than eqiuvalent jobs in high tech, (the field I’m familar with). Most of them are pretty young (20’s - 30’s), moved here from somewhere else, chasing the dream. If you’re coming from Ohio or Wisconsin $40k a year might sound pretty good, but you can barely live on that here when 1 br apts are running >$1200/mo and gas is $4/gal.

They do get flooded with tons of resumes, so they don’t have to offer good salaries and benefits to attract people.

D1 is somewhat in control of her final salary. She gets a reasonable base salary, full benefits and then commission on group/corporate sales. She is happy with it as a first job out of college.

NorthM- my d has a similar set up. For a first job out of college, I think they did great!

But I will add, she never would have had this type of opportunity if –

  1. she stayed in NY area or
  2. went to major leagues.
The entry level job would have most probably been individual ticket sales and not corporate/group sales. My kid feels she fast forwarded her career by about 2 to 3 years by taking a job in a smaller market and getting alot more responsibility. I think in this job market, no matter what the field, kids have to be very flexible- be willing to move away from home and out of their comfort zone. I am so proud and amazed my kid just had the courage to latch onto this new adventure.

it ain’t easy out there- for the sport management major or for most recent college grads. Alot of d’s friends are waitressing, working retail in the mall or just waiting for the perfect job! So a job in your field of study is a great accomplishment these days.
