Anyone know any good colleges that have good sports management programs?

oregon is pretty good in this field. not sure what the major is called there.

Heres an old thread on this subject: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=54370

Look at the U Mass Amherst program .it has one of the best reps. Rice & Michigan too.

Also, check out this organization
.lots of links to sports management schools:

Finally, I read about an initiative at U Penn Wharton about a year ago about starting up a wall street version of sports management, more like a concentration/focus area, rather than an entire program.

here's the web site for the Wharton "Sports Management Initiative":

Ahhhhhhhhh good schools, here's my recommended list.

UMass-Amherst
U Oregon
U South Carolina
U Michigan
Indiana U
U Texas-Austin
U Miami
Ohio U
Bowing Green U
Florida State U
West Virginia U

Go through NASSM, make a list of schools that interest you. It's a good place to start your college search.

anybody know anything on flagler college. It has an ok program and it is only 40 mins. from my house. Is this a respected sports management program outside this area.

redstorm, do you live in North Ponte Vedra beach? I have a beach house I visit there. Right by TPC. School is really nice and St. Augustine is a cool area.

don't mean to thread jack but I live in Ormond which is about 40 mins. south of TPC. I have played there twice actually. It is an awesome place and you must be super rich to have a house there!

No, we don't have a house there, a friend of my parents lives in Jacksonville and has a Beach House there (he lets us stay there, we let him stay at our house, nice trade, lol). But yeah, there are some Mansions there. We're right on US 1. I know right where Ormond is.

Does anybody have a ranking of these schools? Which has the best program? thanks

There is no ranking. You basically can tell the good one's from the bad as to the curriculum, if they have a lot of good courses, how they are with internships and their experience there, if they are approved for NASSM, etc.

Does anyone have a guess? So far I have come up with Bowling Green having the best. Thanks

No, i'd definitely say that UMass-Amherst is the best based on my research, they're approved on all levels through NASSM, offer probably the best MBA/MSA program in the country (Ohio U is also good), and their track record of graduates speaks for itself. Sports Illustrated named Oregon the best, they have a teriffic school with it's own name for SM. You can also ask faculty at various schools what some other good schools that have SM are, most are willing to give otehr schools that they think are good. South Carolina has a very good program with lots of NASCAR ties. Miami has a fantastic regional reputation and tons of oppurtunities with the Heat, Marlins, Panthers, and Dolphins being in town. Michigan has a very good program that gets internships with nearly all Midwest teams. Ohio U has a very good track record of where their graduates end up. BGSU as well.

Thanks that sounds like what I have seen too.

There is always the non sports management undergraduate route in terms of major. Some modern (and young) sports executives do hold degrees from presitgous colleges such as UCB, majoring in American studies. Anyway, if the school you end up going to doesn't have specifically sports management major, as long as you land an internship, you are on your way.

how closely related are Sports Management and Recreation Management? My S is interested in PSU and they offer a Recreation Management degree with a "commercial and community recreation" option. Thanks!

Recreation management is more of parks and community activities, Sports Management is more business based, for professional sports companies and collegiate athletic associations.

Sports managment at Flagler College is HOT!! A good friend of mine graduated from Flagler two years ago and got a great job with the NY Mets.
