Hello,
I've seen a lot of discussion based around ECs and their importance. I'd like to know if sports are weighed a lot on the application...in other words does a sport look better on the application?

Thank you!

Hello,

I think a sport shows commitment and passion, even if you are not a star. For example, my son plays hockey and lacrosse and he played three years of football. Probably not good enough to play in college, but hockey he has been playing since he was 5. He plays in leagues in the summer and spends about 20 hours a week minimum between travel, practice and games during hockey season. In addition, he does a community service that is tied into hockey somewhat as it involves skating with challenged children and young adults.

His applications I think did a good job of tying it all together. Showing a genuine kid who devotes his time and follows through and is able to balance. I am pretty sure his guidance rec mentioned his commitment to sports and he wrote his common app essay about his volunteer work and also wrote his short essay about his temperment that he developed from another sport.

In general, I think the time and commitment is important. Showing that you have a true passion and are devoted to that passion is helpful in the admissions people getting a true picture of who you are, regardless of whether you intend to play that sport in college or not.

Thanks Curlygirl61,
