Spring 2019 college visits with D20/S20: Where are you headed?

@Musicmom2015
UofR lies in the middle of UVA and W&M, it should be an easy stop. We are touring these schools also in April. Did you sign up for the UVA “art tour” as well?

I’m not familiar with the art tour. What is that? We are scheduled for the regular tour and a tour or info session (can’t recall) of the business school.

@Musicmom2015
We are doing those two “tours” as well. There is an “arts grounds tour” section under the department/school tour tab, for students who want to know more about arts/music opportunities (Academics/ECs on campus).

We have another family trip (not college tour-related) over March break, but hoping this summer to do a massive road trip from our home in NY to UPenn, DC (UMaryland-CP, American, GW) and UVA, with maybe a stop on the way back at Hershey Park to unwind and have some non-college fun.

We toured and attended info sessions yesterday at GW and American University. DS liked both very much, liking GW a bit more. We toured University of Miami and University of Florida over the summer. DS loved the University of Miami but the tuition is outrageous. He prefers big cities to small towns. We’ll tour the University of Richmond and VCU hopefully sometime this spring. For some reason, he’s more attracted to private colleges. Ugh!

Off we go! Hope everyone else on the road with a 2020 is having fun.

We are headed to Arts major colleges for theater and singing and possible interest in computer science/coding. in Muhlenberg and maybe Point Park in PA, Drew or Fairleigh -Dickenson in NJ this weekend and Marist & Pace in NY, and then a few in MA including Emerson and Wheaton etc next week and weekend. D20 is reading too many negative reviews on other sites and worried schools are more concerned about their reputation than the student’s concerns and wants to avoid cliques that isolate others. Prefers rural or suburban to city college after attending boarding school in MA.
Any advice on good theater program colleges that offer computer classes too on the east coast(MA, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, VA)?

Have fun @HarrietMWelsch! Post your and S20’s reactions!

S20 and I are making a quick trip next week to University of Richmond and Washington & Lee. We fly to Richmond Tuesday and leave Thursday. D23 is at Wake Forest and he is considering ED there. He thought these would be good schools to see for comparison. We visited about 20 institutions during his sister’s search and he has not had many solo campus visits.

Just broke my leg and had emergency surgery so unless I recover very quickly I think our April road trip to PA is off. Trying to see if we could fly somewhere for a couple of days and drive to a couple colleges close by to the airport but flights are so expensive that week. So bummed out.

@MAmom111 I am sorry to hear about your leg and the surgery and hope that you get better soon. :frowning:

@MAmom111 Very sorry to hear that.

@MAmom111
I am so sorry. Hope for a speedy recovery!
We did summer tour of some colleges last August, even though we didn’t get to see many students, we still met some AND got to see the inside of the dorms more often than not. Also less worries of weather-related delays.
So you still have time for your DC’s college tours.

@MAmom111 I am sorry to hear about your injury. One thing that I may call out is your future trips might be somewhat dependent on whether you can do physical therapy on your own (e.g. need to work with a physical therapist? Is a PT equipment required besides a fitness bike which you might be able to find in a hotel gym, etc.)

Thanks everyone! @BelmontVA that is a good point. I see the surgeon on Monday so hoping to get some clarity on whether or not there is any hope for spring break. Since I’m non weight bearing right now, I have lots of time to research schools and come up with potential trip ideas depending on the outcome.

These trips are getting expensive! Just booked a flight and still need a rental car. And we’ll only see 5 schools on this trip, so we’ll need to do a few more.

Good luck @MAmom111 feel better

@NYC2018nyc 5 seems like a lot for 1 trip! We did 4 the first trip, and 3 this trip. We’ve seen 2 others when we were there for other reasons. And we’ll be done!

Phew! Done for now. Four new (or at least new for this kid) visits, one revisit. Two local schools still to see as day trips. Good news: The kid is definitely doing a much better job of forming opinions/developing a personal ranking based on elements that actually matter. (Which is not to say there weren’t one or two observations that may eventually go over to the “stupidest reasons” thread.) Bad news: What looked like a solid safety for him wasn’t as appealing (to him) as we’d hoped.

Early days still. And on balance I think it’s useful to find that out now, rather than after an application is in.

Day 1 of 6-day tour in the can for us, and another school crossed off the list. That only took an hour so we actually headed over to a different school that wasn’t on D20’s list and sniffed around a bit. No tour or info session but she was intrigued…Next stop tomorrow includes a revisit with interview and then an overnight in the dorm with her cousin.

I’m interested in your impressions, itisatruth and Harriet. We may have colleges in common. We will be visiting in April. Enjoy your week.
