I was admitted for spring 2012. I want to defer my admission to fall 2012. Is this possible? What are my options?
I am a transfer student.

Not sure that it is possible but look at the bright side. You will go to school for 4 months and then be on a long summer break.

Good luck!

What if I withdraw from my classes in spring? Would I be able to come back in the fall?

it is up to the college whether to readmit you and if you withdrew before completing your first semester, it looks like an attempt to defer. They really don’t want the complication of planning for admissions, how many to accept, then having people shift around with deferrals.

you might withdraw and not be accepted back. depends on what kind of risk you want to take.

Basically, you have guaranteed entry to Cal, but only for Spring. If you try the deferral, by asking or withdrawing or any other method, you are no longer guaranteed and might have to reapply from scratch or hope for readmission. It is a gamble and you have to understand and be satisfied if the result is that you are no longer able to attend Cal. If that is okay, then push on. If not, then think hard about how much or whether you want to go to Berkeley and if it is important, figure out how to make spring work for you.

Definitely not worth the risk in most cases. You need to plan around whatever you have to accommodate the Spring 2012 academic schedule into your schedule. (Unless there’s an extremely important reason why you have to defer, and you are willing to risk not being readmitted. If you have an extremely compelling reason, you could work something out with your college too.)
