Spring Break College Tours: CC Secret Handshake?

Another Minnesotan here heading west over spring break to visit Willammette, Whitman, Puget Sound, and Lewis & Clark with D. Two of those campuses will also be on break that week, unfortunately. Can't quite decide if I'm looking forward to the mother-daughter bonding time.....or 4 1/2 hour drive with a teenager to Walla Walla - am I crazy?!

Right now, D wants to tour by herself. I feel weird letting her drive long distances by herself though, so I'm chauffeuring and then hanging out while she takes info session/tour. I thought I'd just borrow some of her clothes and hang out on campus...try to engage in an Ultimate Frisbee game or meaningful political discourse with some students...maybe organize a political rally if the campus seems quiet that way... So I'll be the crazy lady being escorted off campus by security...

I can just see you now, Muffy.........lol.

My D is also the independent type (though only a hs soph at the moment), but I can see her wanting to do the tours herself. You'll have to give me pointers on stirring up trouble on campus while killing time.

Lafalum, I will contact you as soon as our details are set....although my son thinks CC is exceedingly weird.

We'll be at Tufts in late March, too. I'll be the parent asking, "Are there any known energy vortices on campus? My son needs to be near a source of positive energy to keep up his top performance."

Muffy...you are hysterical! Maybe you can crash a frat party later in the day and do some belly shots!

Chisquare: When will you be at Willamette? And can I trouble you for a report on your return? Our Spring Break falls late this year so we won't be there until the second week in April. Any info. you have to share, especially about the interview, would be really appreciated.

Tufts was one of those love-at-first-sight things for S1, and he is a freshman there now. You never know what will strike them. After a while many of those tours and info sessions start to sound a lot alike.
Youngest, then 7, was dragged along on that first very long weekend of college visits, and was a good sport. She loved the cheap hotels (especially the ones with the steamy little indoor pools) and enjoyed eating in college dining halls. She still talks about the delicious 'Woopie Pie' she had at Williams...

Heelys were the saving grace for my 10 year old daughter a couple of years ago. She skated all over the campuses, even in some of the buildings. Some of the students were a little jealous too.

ChiSquare, I do not think you are "crazy". It is definitely doable! We drove to Whitman from Seattle via Yakima, and D and I had a wonderful bonding time.

Thanks, BB - and what did you think of Whitman? (assuming that's why you ventured to Walla Walla....)

The chatter on the Whitman-specific page seems focused on "how to get in" rather than other aspects of the school.

Great thread! Although I'm not sure I'd be considered a "wise" CC poster. lol

We'll be doing some PA schools at the end of March (Lehigh?) Also RPI & Colgate.

Harriet--I'll also (probably) have a kindergartener in tow!!! Fun age difference, isn't it? Btw, appreciated your handle after listening to Harriet the Spy on CD w/kindergartener...

Muffy, love your plan, and I wish I could get away with it. :)
Hunt, I'll keep my ears open for that question. But they'll probably point you towards one of the Jumbos, if you ask that.
Hi, worried_mom - we may miss each other by one day; I'm still sorting that particular couple of days out.
lspf & fpfan, yeah, the younger ones do generally have a great time, and a unique ability to appreciate dining hall food. S2 didn't get any whoopie pie at Wms, but he definitely associates moose tracks ice cream with Wesleyan. And he isn't really ready for heelys (what a great idea, and I'm sure the students were jealous!) but we're seriously thinking about bringing the razr scooter - great for the outdoor parts and easy enough for one of us to carry inside buildings.
Jolynne - I'm SO SORRY we aren't doing the same schools! Wouldn't it be great to know another kindergartener would be around to play with. Yes, it's a ridiculously fun age difference. And thanks for getting my handle. :D
I'm glad other people like this thread. I felt I was really sticking my neck out when I started it!

ChiSquare- while you are in the general vicinity you might consider checking out Whitworth and Gonzage in Spokane- they both give merit aid based on SATs etc and are FAFSA not Profile schools- not as well known, but depending on your situation, could result in a nice financial safety.

North Minnesota,
We WILL be visiting wine country this year.

3 is now a college freshman; #s 1 and 2 are college grads who have local jobs, live at home and pay us rent!

doing boston and nyc and a conneticut side trip

just look for a mother daughter team who look tired (mom anyway) and cranky! (both of us)

and if you see me napping in a big comfy chair, just leave me be

mominva...california wine country???
