Spring Cleaning

Ok, add to list: Clean inside of fridge and oven. Ugh…

We get constant spider webs so window cleaning would be a constant losing battle. I really need to get serious about decluttering, but at least today there was a county recycling/shredding event and we took 26 boxes of files to the shredder! I have had to keep records for 10 years, and have had boxes and boxes! So I love when these opportunities arise!

Yes, today was the day. I’m exhausted!

What did your day include?

Anyone have a “best” way to clean windows? When my kids were home I could sometimes get them to help, but the husband isn’t a willing participant. We do have windows that you can clean the outside of from inside, and I/we do that every year (or so).
I don’t do “spring” cleaning, and the windows and the tile floors don’t get cleaned as often as they should. (Tile floors get “mopped” but the grout starts to look really bad and I only do the hands and knees “deep clean” every couple of years.

For windows, I call and happily pay The Guy. Unfortunately I’ve been cleaning my house myself for the last year and a half, and it’s gotten old pretty quickly. I think I need to find another Guy for that chore.

Ours can all be cleaned inside and outside from inside except for the sun porch . I mean, I just armed myself with my homemade spray and (admittedly, paper towels) and started in one room. A few rooms I have to move a little stuff to free space to tilt the windows but it’s a bit of an effort but I did them all
Myself!

I used to use newspaper (not colored) instead of paper towels. I hate the way the paper feels in my hands though.

My spray is just a spray bottle filled with water (our faucet water is actually pretty good but you could use distilled) , a tablespoon of vinegar and two drops of Dawn.

I used to pay my kids to clean the windows every summer. $5.00 per window. For midwestern double hung windows, it was a bargain.

My technique-bucket of soapy water and rags first, then newspaper and brand name windex.

I painted and reglazed some of my old windows two falls ago prior to new combination storms, which included window washing. That will have to do for another year and they aren’t bad at this point. The new windows installed in the bedrooms last fall included cleaning as part of the install. The workers did a fine job. I will wash the sun porch windows, at a point, as they irk the most. However the street is torn up and full of heavy equipment so clean won’t last long. Perhaps that will wait.

I am usually more concerned about spring gardening than cleaning, aside from a few seasonal jobs like airing rugs and bedding and cleaning refrigerator coils.

I usually go through every drawer and cabinet in my kitchen each spring. It takes forever but I purge unused utensils and gadgets, and reorganize the pantry, fridge, and freezer. I do closets, too, but throughout the year. Windows, any day now, when I get the urge. The minute it stays nice outside, I abandon my inside projects.

Have never cleaned a window. Ever. I don’t know, they stay prett clean. I am however an anti-clutter maniac. My personal motto is “Paper is the enemy of clean.” Really meaning “uncluttered”. I do not allow 99 percent of paper in my home to move past my front hall closet where sits a filing cabinet, my trash recycling bin and a shredding box. I get the mail stand there with my banking app and pay any bill not on auto pay and then immediately recycle. Tax stuff is filed. Anything that needs to be shredded in that box ( taken to a quarterly town shredding event). Only invitations or special cards make it to my bulletin board or my memories box. No paper will make your home remarkably less cluttered.

Decluttered. Lots went into the trash and have a huge bag for donations. Also working on getting the flowerbeds ready. Hiring out staining the fence and window cleaning.

I found this on amazon and have been really impressed. Cleaning goes quickly and the result is really good. We, too, have windows that can be cleaned from both inside and outside (in a condo and all windows connect to outdoor decks).

A friend used to rave about his method to clean windows with newspaper. I don’t recall if he used windex or a mix of vinegar (or ammonia?) and water.

Yes, I used newspaper and I think it was a tad of ammonia, vinegar and water. I just don’t like the feel of the newspaper as I’m using it for multiple windows!

Y’all are such bad influence, haha. I looked at our filthy windows (pollen! dust! cobwebs! oh my!) and looked up the best way to deal with lint that seems to be left after using microfiber scrubbies etc. No more newspapers, alas, and paper towels create a big waste to achieve a meaningful result, so I saw that someone recommended large coffee filters… saying they are better than the newsprint or PT. I will let you know how that goes.

I have a cleaning woman, but she doesn’t do windows. I like them clean, but haven’t done them in years. We will do the French doors that go out onto the screen porch soon as both husband and I noticed last week they really needed it, but our current priority has been putting the basement and garage back together and putting 30 or so native plants into the garden. We got solar power with back up batteries and cleared out the area where the batteries go. We have new shelves there now and slowly are putting things back on them. Meanwhile the old shelves went into the garage and it was a horrible jumble. Today we pulled everything out, threw away several bags worth of garbage. And put it back together. For a break we went and planted native trout lilies at a local park. I’m exhausted!

This is a long shot, but since this is a Spring Cleaning thread, here goes…

Does anyone here live in NYC and have a an apartment cleaning service that you could recommend? It’s for an elderly relative. Thank you!

Cleaning is such an addiction. I love to throwaway those knick-knacks my D and husband collects in the name of spring cleaning. This time it’s a lot of old small appliance finding its way out and some bulk pickup of TV boxes and stuffs. With D heading out to college this fall, looking to see her cupboard getting emptied as well (she’s a stationary junkie)

My husband cleaned the window yesterday, it took like 5 minutes. But last year we cleaned out the garage, after nearly 8-9 years of moving. But I need to do secondary cleaning up. But it doesn’t have to be spring, it’s when I have nothing to do in my garden.

My friend’s sister opened a business when she was in her 50s s a new career. She has a van that is equipped for water, and she just sprays all the windows and then squeegies them. Loves it. Makes a lot of money.
