Im currently a freshman in college and I’m looking to transfer. I know a lot of the applications for 2020 fall admission has passed. But I’m wondering how it would work to potentially start spring of 2021 in colleges in Europe. Specifically in some universities in the UK, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.
Ive done research on the some schools and because of co-vid19 some fall application have been extended. But what is the process of transferring from a 1st year in the US to a 1st year in Europe starting halfway through the year? How should I go about this?
In general, transfers are not a thing in Europe. The typical path is that you apply for a specific course (say, Biochemistry or History), and that is the only subject you study. Typically you have no (or very limited) class choices in Year 1. If you start as a Biochem student and realize that really what you wanted is History you almost always have to re-apply and re-start from the beginning (if the courses overlap it is sometimes possible to apply for a change- for example if a Biochem student decides to do only chem).
As a 1st year US student it is hard to imagine that you would be able to start in mid-year anywhere in Europe, except American University in Paris, which does take transfers & does have a spring admit.
You’re not going to be able to start mid year in the UK.
You might still be able to apply late for fall admission though. Do you know what subect you want to study?
No spring transfer that I know of, except indeed for some American universities (but they’re basically non selective).
However Fall admission deadlines may not have passed or there may be some leeway due to coronavirus - contact universities to see if they still have “places” or if they will accept an application from the US.
