For various reasons my 9th grade son is applying to enter 9th grade (repeat) at several boarding schools next year. My question is about how the admissions folks look at his SSAT score percentiles.
I registered him as a current 9th grader and I understand he is judged within the pool of current 9th graders (usually applying for 10th grade) for percentile purposes in the SSAT report.
However, there are other boys in his class that are also planning to repeat that registered as 8th graders even though they are currently 9th graders. The raw scores would be better because they are being compared to a different pool, right?
Does any of this matter to the prep schools admissions people?

Wow, I never thought of that.

My son is also currently in 9th grade and registered as a 9th grader. He is willing to repeat the 9th grade if requested to by the BS. I would not be surprised if they did make that request because he is currently at a very small school in a very small town in WI.

There is a boy on the forum that had almost the exact same scores as my son but is in 8th grade and his final percentage was 78% while my sons was 70%.

I'd love to know what you are planning to do yourself. Feel free to private message me if you would like.

Those that are in 9th grade and registered as 8th graders should NOT have.

Yeah, that was pretty dumb.

The scores will be compared to others entering 9th (repeaters or not). If you're repeating 9th and registered as 9th, then you did it correctly. I am sure schools have their own methods of comparing scores. I would imagine they look at both scaled scores and percentiles, because they vary depending on grade ( for example, for a 9th grade male a 770 is a 92% in verbal, for a 8th grade male a 770 is a 95%).

I think it depends on the situation, which is why it is always best to ask the person who knows....the admissions director at the school to which you are applying. If the student is repeating because they skipped a grade and are applying as a repeater to "make up" that skipped year, they may want the test scored at the same level as the other students who will be applying for those spots, with the applicants agemates. At least one school has told me this.

But don't worry and fret about it. Call and ask. Then, call the ssat people and ask if the test can be re-scored for that level. It's not a big deal for them to adjust the percentiles a grade up, and that is the only thing that is dependent upon the grade. Raw and scaled scores are the same. Really, I think they look at the scaled scores more, anyway. I have no proof of it, it's just a hunch.
