SSAT score - overall vs. section

If student A had an overall score of 90%, did well on 2 sections but not on the other, how much of an effect will this have on admission? The overall score is pretty good ad satisfies the generalized 80% or higher for HADES schools, but will a poor score (<80%) hurt?

Don’t over obsess on a SSAT score-- especially subscores. It will not be dispositive one way or the other on your admissions decision. Honest. Relax, the applications are in and the test have been taken. There nothing you can do and no amount of tea leave guessing will work. Try, I know it is very very hard, to put your mind elsewhere for the next six or so weeks.

The Admissions people know that some people are "prepped’ for these tests and some are not – if you’re at a rigorous private school, and have the means and know-how to study for the SSAT, you’ve got an advantage. You can probably pay full tuition as well. I was told by an Admission’s officer at a HADES school that they can tell right away, whether an applicant is coming from a private or a public school when they look at the recommendations. If you write and interview well, I bet that communicates a lot more than a couple of numbers or letters on a page. I’d be looking for original thinking, creativity, authenticity, and kindness, not someone who’s trying to “beat the odds,” by getting perfect scores, straight As, and submitting ten extra letters from alumni and board members. Another admissions person told me, you can often tell when talking to someone within the first five minute whether they’d be a good fit for the school or not. If you’re comfortable with who you are and can be yourself, both in person and on the page, your authority and confidence will be attractive to others.

Take etondad’s advice and don’t stress.

Good advice from all. Your SSAT will not be the deciding factor because you meet the standard. Relax, and even if you don’t get in, it looks like you have done very well and you should be proud. Many considerations are beyond your control and not a reflection on your abilities.
