SSat scores.

Verbal 779 95%
Math 743 74%
Reading 728 89%
Total 2250 92%

I was a little confused...do they really average out that much, that even with 74% math I can still get a total 92%?
Also, would you recommend taking them again?
Thanks in advance :)

They way they do it is they take the 2250 that is your total and give you a percentile by how other people did overall. 743 may be the 74% for maths, but 2250 is 92% for overall scores.
Those are good scores, but it depends on what schools you're applying for. 74% is a little low for some schools, but fine for others.

Ahh I see. Thanks for explaining that. Although my math isn't high, I currently have a 98 average in Algebra II and will have a good recommendation so I was hoping that would help even it out?

You have a projected SAT math score of 743 which is high. Overall you did very well. Congratulations!

I suggest doing a retake only if you have scored significantly higher on your practice tests in math. And even then I think it is only worthwhile doing if you are only applying to the most competitive schools. Good luck!

I was actually expecting the highest of my scores in math and lowest in verbal! But I most likely will not retake the test, as I will not be applying to the most competitive schools and my parents don't feel it is absolutely necessary, which I agree with :) Thanks

With a total of 92%, I would agree with your parents.

Yes, I would say that it does even out. Also, some schools have the sequence of Algebra I, Algebra II THEN geometry. If that's the case with you and you have not taken geometry, that could be why it is lower. The schools will see that as well in your application.

I actually have taken geometry...but i was horrible at it

That's probably why your math score was lower. I wouldn't worry about it, the great math grades and a good teacher recommendation will make up for it like you said.

Linda S, would an 8th grader be expected to know geometry? My son is taking Algebra II and next year he will take geometry.

No, usually most rising ninth graders have completed Alg. I but not Geometry. There are a few people (like my roommate) who have completed Geometry, but then also a few people who haven't completed Algebra.

Exactly as Olivia says. Geometry isn't a very large part of the maths test, but if you haven't taken it, it's worth reviewing in a Princeton Review/Kaplan practice book, because there are a few key things that do appear on the test.

What they said. But there are geometry questions on the test and that is why in 8th grade you could get a bunch wrong or unanswered and still have a high percentile.
