Hi Everyone:
I am taking the SSAT sometime next year, and absolutely need a tutor to study the SSAT. Any suggested tutors/programs/companies in the east coast? Also, any tips on affording these?
Thanks,

Do you really need a tutor? Many students are successful without one, but if you insist then why not. They are quite helpful&effective so I can see why you want a tutor.
Although I do not know any companies or tutors in the east coast, there are always digital alternatives. For example, the SSAT pack that you can purchase at ssat.org is very helpful. I used it for the test and got a great score.
Many people recommend it, so it’s something you could look into. There is many other threads about the SSAT, regarding tips and methods to study. Make sure that you check those ones out.
Sorry I can’t help you with specific companies in the east coast, but I’m sure someone else on CC will stumble across this thread and answer that segment of your question.
Good luck
There are many test prep centers that will offer tutoring for SSAT as well as baseline testing with mock or real tests. Both Kaplan and Princeton Review have SSAT prep classes, as well as local test prep centers near me. Some kids use Quizlet for vocab and books for math/English. I have found centers in New York and Boston (and others) with a quick Google search. Look through old threads for more tips.
@orangemountain Its something that I’d benefited from in the past. Thanks for the advice.
@MA2012 Great! Thank you.
I used the website “Wyzant” to find a tutor for a couple sessions before my first SSAT. We had lessons online, but some are willing to travel a certain distance. Prices vary depending on the tutor. We were able to find an affordable option. My tutor gave me useful strategies and I entered feeling prepared. My friend had online Princeton Review lessons and said they helped a lot (6% improvement), but they at least $100 per hour.
Some other things that helped were: IXL.com, physical flashcards, Membean.com, and reading a ton of advanced books (I also used the books to make some vocabulary lists). I can’t concentrate, so I studied with my brother and mom at the library. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your teachers at school for help, my teachers had plenty of useful work sheets and were able to identify my weaknesses. Good luck!
Would you hire another student? My kiddo wanted to tutor ( got a perfect score without cracking a book). Thought it might be fun to tutor the SSAT ( wants to do math only as s/he thought it would be impossible to teach reading comprehension and vocab) . I thought it might be good for a student who recently took the test to tutor another student. There are lots of teachers listed but how do you know they would have gotten a great score? You should try posting something at your local library or ask another kid who got 96-99% to help you. My kiddo was thinking $30-40 bucks an hour. ( Others charge about $75-90). Hey, it’s a great way to earn money and help at the same time. Have to have a kid with a lot of patience.
Ivy Global was very helpful to me. The tutors are extremely helpful, thorough and experienced. If I recall correctly, a complete package is $3,000 and it includes books and private tutoring sessions. They also offer single 2hr sessions for $280. I wish you the best of luck for your application journey!
Also, I only did a single session. The full package is pretty expensive (so is the single session, tbh). Most of my studying was done through Ivy Global’s textbooks, the official SSAT guide, vocabulary.com, and any other free online SSAT material.
Kiddo did an online webinar of 5 or 6 sessions with Test Innovators. I think it was a few hundred $…not too expensive - there were only 5 students in the virtual classroom - the teacher was really good. Think it was a nice jump start to studying. Best wishes on your journey!
Wow, those prices are steep. A couple of hundred I can see but thousands seems really high.
