SSAT-Vocab

Vocabulary scores seem very hit or miss. It's a real crap shoot, I think. I suspect there's a lot of volatility in those scores among test-takers who take the SSAT more than once in a year.

My son got three words on his test last year that he came across in the days leading up to the test. One of them he heard on the radio as we drove to the test: incorrigible. Suppose he got those three wrong (he left 0 blank over the entire test; don't ask me why) instead of correct. That's a 3.75 swing in the raw score. And I suspect it would have been a big drop in his vocab %ile (which was high 90s).

Knowing this I've come to look at vocab scores with a jaundiced eye -- or at least I see them as having a higher margin of error than the other sections -- even if that margin of error worked to his benefit.

4 months is "just". I consider alot of things "just". It just depends on the event and the measure of time. i.e. "I just finished middle school!" POST EDITED FOR COMPREHENSION!!!*.
Context.

Consider this subject dropped, Miss. Pixiechick. I refuse to talk about this any further. However, keep in mind that calling me out on completely ridiculous issues is not a very nice way to make friends, here.

Ummm okay. Because you mandate that a subject is to be dropped, it should happen? You're just upset because I found some inconsistencies in your "tails" (in keeping with the kitty cat theme!) Like I said, I could care less what your scores are. But if you are going to ask for Chances, keep your stories straight!

We shall forget that this little cat fight ever happened and act like the mature young adults we both are. Please, stop provoking this little spat.
I'm sure your very qualified. I'm sure I'm very qualified. I'm sure you are very honest and I'm sure that I am very honest.
We will leave it here, agreed?

Why do you keep editing all your prior posts to me--adding additional information after I have already responded to your one or two sentence post? Do you think it makes you appear smarter?

Hey, I am not here to make friends. I have lots of friends. I come here to learn more about the schools, the other kids that are applying to the schools, and some times, as I did tonight, for some good laughs! Don't take offense. (and I really don't understand your edited, added post about "want a cig?" Do you mean cigarettes? Wow...

Oh lord. Go away.

Wow, I thought we were supposed to be acting like 'mature young adults.'

Your making it very difficult for both of us.

It's really all irrelevant because the whole chances thing is pretty much a game of make-believe. Considering that everyone here who answers is making wild guesses and making predictions they're wholly unqualified to deliver, it only makes sense that the data inputs bear little relation to reality. It's not like the quality of the predictions is being undermined by someone posting inaccurate data.

Yes, the old saw is true: crap in...crap out.

But, also true is this variation on that theme: accuracy in...crap out.

It's not like lots of hard work and effort goes in to producing the chances predictions. It's pretty much a game all around...with the exception (I suppose) being people who are asking for very broad guidance and feedback as to whether they're even playing in the right ballpark and looking for suggestions as to where to apply. But once the discussion shifts from "should I apply here" to "will I get in" it's all just silly time. And if people want to make up SSAT scores or pretend they've won Nobel Prizes it really shouldn't matter because the resulting predictions will be ridiculous and presumptuous stabs in the dark.

it's kind of hypocritical that you say you are not here to make friends, but to learn about schools. you know because if you're here to learn about schools what's the point of making enemies. it's all the same

one question, why do you care what her ssat scores are? I sure don't

I completely agree with D'yer Maker.
Way to be the referee, DM :)

wow, i just read that whole thread, it was pretty funny actually!

but pixiechick, you sound pretty stalkerish if you ask me...i mean did you just look up all her posts and record every "inconsistency" as you call them?! I think it's slightly ridiulous to even bring up her scores because many people DO take the test more then once. (i'll probably have to ;))

But let's all play nice, shall we?

(LOLLOLLOLLOL)

and and crickett, congrats on awesome vocab score! cheers

I personally don?t think Pixiechick was trying to act like a stalker, but perhaps she was just confused on the fact that Crickett didn?t say that she took the tests several times on her original posts. (I saw that Crickett didn?t say she took it several times until this thread that she did.)

Of course this may not have been the best aproach Pixie used, but she probably just wanted to get the facts straight. (I saw that she didn?t say she took it several times until this thread that she did.)

well, i wasn't entirely seriosus about the stalker thing. ;)

um yes!!! I knew like NONE of the hard vocab, omitted a few, and then guessing on some of the rest by narrowing down choices. I hope that I get good scores on the math and reading to balance out my probably HORRIFIC verbal scores. YUCK!!!!!! And I don't even take latin--I take French! HELP ME!!!!! :)

my school doesn't even ofter latin....:( why did they (the test makers) give verbal the most questions and make verbal count the most? isn't math and reading equally important? i'm going to cry when I see my LOW verbal score...

You'd be surprised at your verbal score.

I took Spanish (my school didn't offer Latin), and still managed to get a fairly proficient score in the verbal section.

I also didn't omit anything. Perhaps this was good for my score, mayhaps not.

just studying a list of latin roots helps. also I have found that I know a bunch of words from french, so those languages aren't completely useless. and when you think about it, latin may help with a section of the ssat/ sat, but after that when will you use it again? spanish/ french/ mandarin/ german are useful because people actually speak them

for those that have been doing the freerice, what's your high score? just wondering because I don't know what 36 means in real life

My high score was like 2000 grains
