SSTI Southeastern summer theater institute

Would love to hear experiences about this summer camp, including travel there, audition process or anything you would like to share!

How funny – I just heard about this program tonight from my very-interested DD '20. Following!

We know quite a few kids who went to the Middle school program the last couple of years they really loved it. We live in NC so they drove there… and the parents rented a condo in the vicinity and made a vacation out of it.

I saw great improvements in the kids who attended.

I have also heard really great things

We had a young man from our town in Connecticut go to SSTI last summer and he liked it quite a bit. (sorry, we didn’t get more details - getting info from teens can be tough sometimes) My daughter was planning to go this coming summer, but lost interest when she saw what show they were going to do Tuck Everlasting as the session 2 musical. She might have had interest in Chicago, but we weren’t sure about the timing with the end of school.

My daughter did StageDoor last summer and liked her experience there, but SSTI offers an extra week, better accommodations and is like $1,000 less.

@Collegegame2018 – did you ever find out any information about SSTI?

We did and decided it was a great choice for our high schooler. He was accepted yesterday.

So was my daughter. Any scoop you can share would be greatly appreciated!

@Loganator awesome! Which session? We are session 2. I am trying to see if there is a way to private msg you.
We have been looking at this program for 2 years and have found other people that have attended and loved it. One of the draws for us were the people that are brought in to mentor and teach master classes.

@Loganator who are they bringing this year?

Here is a list of former master class teachers as well as a apartial list of faculty for this summer. 25 kids a session, audition only makes for a well balanced individualized program. The smaller size was also a big draw for us.

A friend of ours went a couple of years ago. She had a great experience. She flew in from the midwest by herself; they picked her up at the airport (she had done dance intensives in other states before, so going off on her own wasn’t a totally new experience).

@Collegegame2018 – she is session 2 also, for Tech. I know nothing beyond what’s on their website; we don’t know anyone who has attended. My D found it while looking for summer tech theatre experiences (there are few!) and applied. She heard nothing on Friday and assumed she was not accepted. I saw the SSTI Facebook post on Saturday that mentioned “all high school students” being notified of admission decisions on Friday and emailed to ask. Turned out she was accepted but hadn’t received the email. I am so excited for her!

Hi! I’m one of the regional ambassadors for SSTI and would love to answer any questions people have. I’m going to be in Session 2. Again if anyone has any questions feel free to ask me or email Ben, the program director, at info@summertheatreinstitute.com

Thanks, @alofredo1! No specific questions at the moment, but I will post as we think of them. Mostly I am just excited for my daughter.

@alofredo1 I’m not sure if you have the facilities and staff available, but has there been any thought to expanding the program to do two musicals each summer session? My daughter looked into the program and really liked what it had to offer, but was kind of deflated when she found out Tuck Everlasting was the session 2 musical. I’m sure she would have had a good time and it’s probably better than she realizes, but I think she would prefer to go a camp that offered a show she’d be excited about and I don’t really want to twist her arm, either.

My daughter was disappointed by the selection as well but decided to go anyway. The production was unbelievably amazing!! She had an incredible experience!

So did my Man in the yellow suit!

Which weekend, first or second? My daughter put thousands of LEDs on the hanging umbrellas. ?

@Loganator First weekend, C said the techies were awesome! They were definitely the back bone. It took so much to pull all of that off!
