I am an American student who'd really like to attend St. Andrews University in Scotland.
I kind of came to this revelation late which is why I'm just now applying but I am actually very interested.
My question is do I increase my chances using their direct application or should I go ahead and use the UCAS? I was thinking I'd apply to more than one school in the UK if I'm applying there but the reality is St. Andrews is my top pick and I'd don't want them thinking I've applied to other UK universities so one of the others can take me. I haven't found St. Andrews on the Common App even though I can use that to apply with.
Does anyone have any thoughts at to the best approach?

First, go to the Common App and through the search function, search by ‘country’ and select the UK. There you will see the option for St. Andrew’s.

Second, if you’re thinking of applying to more than one school in the UK, then by all means use the UCAS application. There’s no real advantage to the direct apply, except for those students (generally EU or other international students, since the US students can now easily apply via CA) who are only applying to St. Andrews.

Thanks hop, if St. Andrews is my top pick is there any advantage to applying Common Ap or direct application and their knowing they are the only school I’m applying to. If that would help them to make a positive decision to accept me then I wouldn’t apply to other UK schools. Just wondering.

Hi! Like you, I am an American student and on Wednesday I actually got accepted to St. Andrews! It is my number #2 choice, for now I need to wait for my King’s College London decision. Since I applied to multiple schools in the UK, I used UCAS. I have a teacher that is young and from Wales so she was able to help me with the terminology and what to put and not put. I also submitted my KCL application through CommonApp and they have told me that they are having a difficult time trying to put everything together, for I have not heard anything. However, I heard back from St. Andrews in about 3 weeks! If you need more help, feel free to ask me anything :)

Congratulations Belleofthehall!! I was actually just visiting St. Andrews over Thanksgiving! It is a great school, beautiful town. King’s College is excellent as well! Hopefully you’ll hear from them very soon!
I wish I knew someone with UK experience to help me with my personal statement. As I said earlier I came to this realization late into the application game. I applied to quite a few U.S. schools and I now realize that St. Andrews and University of Edinburgh are my top picks! Oh well, I’m going to get my application in and see what happens. Let me know what you hear from Kings. Good luck!

Hopey, with regards to PS help, I’d suggest having a look at http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Personal_Statement_Library (remove the asterisks to make the link work - CC will censor it otherwise).

If you’ve got any specific questions, then I’m happy to help - I’m a UK student and I’m more than familiar with what a PS should look like.
