Hi everyone! This thread is for those thinking of applying for the class of 2023 at St Andrews in Scotland. My brother is a rising sophomore there so I know some stuff already, but I was wondering if there’s any legacy admission or anything similar for St Andrews?
If there are any current students around, feel free to share your experience of applying
I heard they do like legacies. Why @collegemom3717 do you say no boost?
B/c they don’t do legacy preferences in the UK. Among other things, it violates consumer law
St As does like Americans, though. A lot.
Wow so interesting. Thanks for letting me know.
I just applied to St. Andrews on Sunday to the Biology program! Hoping to hear back by Thanksgiving.
@vacollege2019 what scores are you applying with?
@vacollege2019 We were told on average it takes 8 to 10 weeks to hear back and for popular majors longer. Biology is pretty popular.
2.5 weeks is pretty optimistic- don’t get too focused on that date
@vacollege2019 – Just fyi, My D applied to St. A’s in biology this time last year and she didn’t hear back from them until March (with unconditional acceptance!) I think she ended up sending her mid-year grades in January or early Feb – just a screenshot from her online grading system, not full transcript. They operated much more like an American college in terms of decision than she expected. (She heard from Oxford, Edinborough and Durham in December, fyi.)
Not to say you won’t hear earlier – but just wanted to pass her experience on!
Good luck!!
Mine applied to Chemistry in October 2 years ago and heard back Dec 13.
Curious has anyone heard back from St. Andrews yet this year?
Thanks for letting me know! I read on previous forums that decisions come out pretty quickly but it makes sense that they wouldn’t come out until March or if I’m lucky Christmas. My stats @VickiSoCal are pretty okay - 1410 on SAT, full IB diploma candidate (HL in biology, Lit, and History) weighted 3.9 GPA. Hopefully doing full IB will help me out.
I have not heard back yet submitted early October through St. Andrew’s direct @college curious
I heard back deferred until my first term grades come out
I applied for the 5 years masters in Applied Math
@collegemom3717 I do not understand your response. @begonias if you look at last year’s thread they requested first term grades from multiple students who got accepted soon after they were submitted.
Ahh ok thank you!! I’ll keep my fingers crossed
@collegecurious, it was short-hand notation for “deferred does not equal denied”- in other words, ‘be encouraged’ ‘it can still come right’ ‘you are still in with a chance’.
OP, as @collegecurious noted, it is just a wait & see. My guess is that you are currently taking one or more classes that are quite relevant to your course and they want to see how you handle it.
@begonias see if your school will send out your first quarter grades. Most schools do for ED schools and schools that request them.
