St. John's University Physical Science/Pre-Engineering Program

My son got accepted into the 5 year dual degree Physical Science/Pre-Engineering program at St. John's University. How hard is it? Any reviews about the program?

I heard those 3+2 Engineering is pretty risky. I know someone who studies at St. Johns for the 5 year dual degree pre engineering with NYU-Poly. The problem here is that NYU-Poly is a separate engineering institution until Jan. 2014 so he would need to find a different alternative for his BS engineering degree.

As another option can your son get into Fordham? Fordham has a 3-2 program (5 years) with Columbia’s Fu School of Engineering. It is a tough program but the rewards are great. He would get a BS in math, physics, physics engineering or similar from Fordham and a BSE from Columbia in any one of many fields of engineering. Admission into Columbia is fairly automatic with a 3.2 average. Many kids apply for this program as sort of a “Back-door” into Columbia engineering as it is a crazy hard school to get into as a freshman.

The Fu School of Engineering of Columbia is ranked #4 in the nation for engineering and having an Ivy League engineering degree can give your son an edge. NYU-Poly is going through some changes now and it might be a bit shakey as noted above.

Best of luck to your son.
