Hi Everyone!!!
I’ve applied to half musical theatre and half vocal performance schools. These are the two schools I am accepted to for a BM in Vocal Performance and I wanted to know if anyone knew anything about them or had a strong leaning between the two.
Thank You!!!

What does ocu stand for?
The vibe on the st. Olaf campus is awesome. My son decided to cancel his audition there because he was accepted to his top choice school. But it is a great place.
Do they both cost about the same?
@cellomom6 OCU is Oklahoma City University – Sorry And Thanks!!!
Not originally the same price, but with scholarships and grants they are both around 25,000 per year including room and board
Have you been to the st.olaf campus? It’ beautiful. But I know nothing about voicw. I sure they will have opinions.
Yes, I auditioned on campus and it was definitely beautiful! It’s definitely a top choice, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t throwing away another good choice Thank you for responding!!! I appreciate it so much!
StO is a wonderful place IMO. I know nothing about your other option, but have you compared teachers, campus feel etc? The StO campus is quite beautiful and the town or Northfield is really charming if that’s your thing. There is a bus from the campus center with easy access to MSP.
Thanks! @saintfan
The vocal department at St. Olaf us good. We know a young man who is a singer that is extremely happy there.
StO is also a great place to be if you decide to shift your focus slightly. Many people decide part way in to do music ed or some other things and if that should happen you wouldn’t be “stranded” in a place that is no fun to be. There are, of course, many choirs and lots of opportunities to sing no matter what direction you take.
D is at OCU as a double majoring MusicalTheater and VP. Loves it! She is a freshman and is definitely improving by leaps and bounds. Was able to do a small part in one of the operas ( Poppea) as a freshman. Lots of performance opportunities for all the students. 3 operas and 3 musicals per year done by the school, plus operations every semester ( student run operas or opera scenes. Very supportive environment for the students.
Thank you everyone who has responded!!!
Being from Texas, my kids’ have many friends who have attended OCU. From what I’ve observed, they are much stronger in musical theatre than classical voice - based on graduate successes. We know a couple VP/MT grads who went on to do national tours and Broadway, but none who have had tremendous success in opera. The voice training is excellent as is the dance training for MT. And Oklahoma City is a good college town - lots to do, especially if you like country music!
Perhaps it isn’t as well publicized, but there have been a number of more recent successes for opera from OCU. For example 2 of their advanced students are doing Seagle this summer, and D’s studio teacher taught lyric coloratura Sarah Coburn. I do think the MT folks get more press but perhaps that’s an easier sell? But YMMV. Good luck whatever your choice!
