I wanna go to a school that's not really serious in athletics, and more focused on the arts. Also, is it truly necessary to have an AMAZING ssat score to get into these schools?

Stevenson is probably the most artsy school of the three, then SPS, then Lawrenceville.

re SSAT Aim for high 80s + for Lville and SPS. I think Stevenson would give you more leeway regarding SSATs.

I assume that you’ll be looking at more than these three schools. Concord has an amazing arts program and is less focussed on sports. The average SSAT there is 84%, but keep in mind that your academic program, grades, and references are more important.

OP wasn’t asking about Concord Academy (although St. Paul’s is in Concord, NH)

I know. I began suggesting other schools. Most people look at more than three.

One of the most unique things about Stevenson is that it publishes on its site the college acceptances of each of its seniors, ranked from first to last. Stevenson doesn’t publish the names, of course, but you can get a very good feel for what colleges the entire class attends, ranked by GPA. There probably isn’t much difference in quality between the top 20 or Stevenson grads and the top 20 at most other schools of the same size, so the acceptances actually flag what your own results might be if you were top 20 and attended a respected school. You can also see the quick fall off in college quality after a certain point and can clearly see the expectional, low GPA kid who must have had something “else” and gets into a great school. See

I checked for the class of 2014, but Stevenson has unfortunately defaulted to the typical boarding school generic list of colleges and numbers attending that every other prep school employs – although at least I give Stevenson credit for focusing on just the 2014 class and not hiding horrible acceptance results behind 5 year acceptance summaries like many other boarding schools (who need to capture that one exceptional kid who got into Brown 5 years ago and so still “count” him among their misleading typical acceptances so that the school looks like Andover or Exeter as regards college acceptance when it really is generally pathetic).

what are some tips in getting into these schools other than good ssat score, gpa and stuff? should i try to impress the people that are interviewing me? @photodad @makennacompton @MBVLoveless

Trying to impress the interviewer is not a good idea. A large part of the interview is seeing whether you can have a reasonable conversation with an adult. Another part is trying to see whether you would fit in at the school, so be yourself.

An important part of you application is your recommendations, so it’s a good idea to talk to the teachers about why you’re applying to an independent school and why you’re a great candidate.

^second. Try to get to know your teachers well, behave in class, and participate. It would be weird to write a recommendation about someone who you don’t know at all.

Essays are very important as well. Try to reflect who you are in your writing as much as you can.
