Yah, but I have also heard that BS kids are pretty exclusive.

explain please benevolent

Asians only interact with other internationals.

The varsity athletes stay together

The really smart kids spend most of their time in the library talking amongst themselves.

Well as far as the internationals they do tend to stick together but that is mostly because they are able to talk to each other in their first languages which makes them feel more at home. But internationals do hang out with other kids as well, so it's not that big of a deal.

The varsity athletes do stick together but it is only mostly during meal times because they have the same diets and work out together and stuff.

And personally at top boarding schools we're all really smart (well most of us, lol) but the library is kind of actually a social spot. But the studious people do find other studious people to hang out with. I also find that the really studious people are also good at music and that they tend to hang out in the music building.

ill be with the varisty kids haha... i try to be studious, but im not exactly a book worm, and im irish and british(AKA, completely American) haha

I'll probaby only be a JV athlete. All of my thoughts are just the impressions that I have got from my sister's BS. Also when I toured SPS, my tour guide was an international, and he told me that all the Asians like hanging around by the window in the library that overlooks the lake.

benevolent4them, I'm sorry but your tour guide was only partially true because EVERYONE likes to sit by the huge window in the library.

So at SPS do people talk to people outside of their "form" a lot. Like not just people you play sports with of course. Like just in general.

Underclassman get bullied mostly. HAHA... at my sister's BS seniors go to lunch first. The freshman don't enter the dining hall until everyone else has finished eating.

Well I won't be an underclassmen. I was just wondering how it is at SPS with stuff like that. Like is it a big deal for a sophomore to talk to a senior girl or something...stuff like that. (Gobigred)

Mpicz, it's weirder if you only talk to people in your form. Since you have classes with people in basically every form you get to know a lot of people. And there are more people dating each other from different forms then people in the same form dating each other.

3rd form my son's best friend was a 6th former, He has always had close friends in other forms. His current best friend is a fellow 5th former who rooms with a 6th former. And while the Asians may hang out, my son is a member of the Korean Society and spoke at chapel for Martin Luther King day. He is not Korean or black. So, yes it gets mixed up a lot. The school goes out of its way to admit kids that are willing to mix and then it tries to encourage it. There are a number of dorm activities which stay within your gender but cut across forms. Dorms are also mixed by forms so the chances are good that the kids on either side of your room may be from other forms.

Ok thank you guys for the info. Do you get to choose dorms/roomates before the school yr based on interests and activities? If so does this create dorm stereotypes?

Yeah, you fill out a sheet with questions like:
How clean are you?
Do you often play loud music?
And other stuff like that. And yeah there are definitely dorm stereotypes. Like there are dorms known for having tons of dancers, most of the minority kids, all the techies, all the hockey bros, all of the rich girls and stuff like that.

One of the things my child and I like about SPS is the vertical housing - all 4 grades live in the dorms which is different from many schools where the freshman are placed in seperate freshman only dorms. I think its great because you do become friends with people outside your form and the upperclassmen can share their knowledge and experiences with the new students.

There is a lot of mixing among the forms as GoBigRed12 and Winterset have stated.

i have heard some scary storys about hazing at SPS though. it sounded like it happened a while ago, but still... especially with underclassmen on varisty teams get a whole intiation process by the seniors.

Hey!

Winterset, I was wondering about religious tolerance and diversity at SPS.

Yeah I wouldn't know that much about hazing in sports, i'm not a varsity athlete :(

But as far as religious tolerance I think that being a Episcopalian school religion comes up often and the school is really open to learning about different religions. For example, with the new 3rd form Humanities curriculum we learn about the major religions in the world and there history. In addition the school has something called the ASK fellowship which is a club where you basically talk about different views on religion and there is also a Taize service every sunday and it's basically a time for people to meditate in the chapel. Most students at the school are either Christian or non religious.

As far as diversity there is a good amount for such a small school. For racial diversity I would say that there are a lot of races and countries represented. For people coming from different economic backgrounds we definitely have a lot of diversity. We've got anything from a kid who only wears hand me downs to a kid who doesn't own anything worth less than 200 dollars. And as far as diversity in the lesbian, gay or bisexual view I say that there are a lot of people who are any of the three and the school is very accepting. The other day in fact in chapel a student came out in front of the entire school for his senior speech and it was the most amazing moments that I have had at the school so far. Everyone was so loving and understanding of his message and it is a speech that I will never forget. Plus the student who came out performed wonderwall by oasis and got the whole school singing it for at least a week.

Thanks for the answer GoBigRed!

argh i still havent received my online decision email from sps yet.. i received a mail few weeks ago after i completed my app that there will be info for the online thing in feb.. its march now!
